Reviews
- Edited 9 months agoPeter Michael Tong and George Alan O'Dowd Presents Ministry of Sound Annual 2.
Mixed and produced by the remarkably talented Charlie brook at Wise Buddah who co produced the highly successful In the Mix compilations with Simon Walsh.
For the first 5 tracks on CD1 starts of with a vigorous mix of dance tracks and Charlie mixes Heller & Farley into Sandy B so brilliantly, the mixing is very neat and tidy as well as the beats in 100% perfect sync. Then Disco Elements by Sensory Productions really adds a nice touch to the mix as I absolutely loved that track back in the late 90s and was the reason why I bought the album back then.
If I was to express any critics I would say that it would have probably been better to use the original version of Stretch n Vern I'm alive which would have made the mix more consistent and smooth however Charlie was still able to pull it off and mix it perfectly using the breakbeat version.
Another nice smooth flow between track 9 and 13 but unfortunately Groovebird would have been more suitable on CD2 as it had to be slowed down to fit in with faithless.
CD2 has a nice selection of tracks however The Lover That You Are by Pulse should have gone of CD1 as it had to be pitched up to 136BPM when it's 124BPM standard. Firestarter and Bornslippy would have been better at the end of the CD.
There are a few tracks from CD1 that would have been better on CD2 Vise versa and had they shuffled them around a bit it would have made a perfect mix album. But again the track selection of the compilations was up to ministry of sound who then sent the tracks to the producer to mix the album which in this instance is Charlie Brook who always does a fantastic job.
Overall it is still enjoyable to listen to and I still do to this day. - Edited one year agoUbiquitous chart hits and a few anthems mixed by two blokes who routinely mix ubiquitous chart hits and a few anthems.
The Ministry Annuals were pants - Edited 2 years agoI have a feeling this is probably one of the best Annuals.
First off it's worth noting that this is one of the few mix CDs where you're going to hear the original white label of Lisa Marie - Jumpin' - it's got a much chunkier bassline, far grittier...and uses the original 70s vocals lifted from the disco anthem...*cough*
You can also hear it in Essential Mix Volume 2 where Charlie Brook also took the mixing reins for Pete Tong, as well.
Speaking of which, the mixing. Brilliant, as expected by Charlie Brook (of "In The Mix" alongside Simon Walsh the unsung heros of so many other great mix CDs) taking the steering wheel. The tracklist is really great on both CDs offering up a great selection of 'mature' dance tracks; I suppose it *could* have delved a little deeper into trance to be honest, but it's a very house/progressive...and even early hard house (handbag?) in some places. Both CDs start out very strong but I thought perhaps lost it in the tracklisting a little toward the end on each where things got a bit repetative. I'd still quite happily sit and listen through with very few skips overall. A brilliant slice of dance music history.
I hope Charlie reads these comments about the mixing and takes them to heart! Well deserved praise. - Edited 2 years agoThis Annual is probably the best the Ministry ever did, with the Annual III in close second. Not just the amazing line up of tracks, but the mixing itself. My personal favourite transition is how Pete Tong takes the Fatboy Slim Remix of 'I'm Alive', with a BPM of around 100, into the Armand Van Helden Remix of 'Professional Widow', with a BPM of 128. Despite the clear tempo difference, he manages to loop it so perfectly that it's as if the tempo change never happened. Then he starts bringing Sugar is Sweeter into it, and just makes this feel more like an actual 'mix', rather than a set of tracks just thrown together, which is how Ministry does it now. The whole album feels like a night actually in the club, and apart from a few strange moments (I'm looking at you Firestarter), the mixing is spot on. No wonder it broke the world record for Best Selling Club Dance Compilation.
- The album that introduced me to dance music as an 11 year old and kicked started my DJ'n. Pete Tong & Boy George blending the sounds of that years dance floor hits. An audio annual that captures the year perfectly.
- anyone else wish it was 1996 again?! Man Britain was such an awesome place in the 90s. This is without doubt the best of the MOS Annuals (IMO closely followed by IV). This will still sound awesome in 2030.
- I remember hearing the beginning of Boy George's mix being played loud in a Virgin Megastore when this came out. I hated it back then, and I still hate it now - the way he slaughters "Born Slippy", switching into it right in the middle of the vocals, and switching to the next track way too soon. But don't let that fool you - starting with the third track, George's mix turns into a non-stop joyride of uplifting, fast house music with a few extra slices of cheese. Recommended!
