- I bought this on prerecorded cassette in Cambridge market not so long after it was released. Loved it ever since. Breaks my heart how little Lyle released outside of PMG, his last solo album was 20 years before his untimely death. I love pretty much everything Pat Metheny has released, but I'm not sure he'll ever quite achieve what he did with Lyle. This album is such a beautifully performed, arranged and varied set of compositions. May you rest in peace Lyle.
- Love this album although I listened to it for the first time 35 years after it was released. I wish I had come across it much earlier now. I sounds like a Pat Metheny album (and that's a good thing). I like the piano solos the best. The guy is outstanding. Really cool that he has Bill Frisell on the album too. It must be nice to go from Pat Metheny to Bill Frisell.
- Edited 6 years agoNot so much a full on jazz album and more like jazz infused soundscapes. This album is proof of the genius that is Lyle Mays especially when in the context of texture. He like Joe Zawinul is one the few that understands how to utilize synthesizers and acoustic instruments in jazz. Bill Frisell guests on the debut and so does Nana Vasconcelos who happened to make my favorite Metheny Group album Offramp a winner. Anyway, this I dont consider jazz fusion as there are no wild jagged rhythmic edges or in yer face soloing on the ivories but instead semi placid and textural compositions with a lot of space in the music as to create a lucid airing feeling. I love this album and it's brilliant bastard stepchild Witchita Falls!
- Edited 13 years agoOK, so this album is definitely somewhat "smooth." Let's face it, Lyle Mays has never made any music that offended anybody. And there's certainly a mid-1980s feel to this record, though in a positive, uplifting way. Overall, his self-titled album is a piece of beauty -- well thought-out, engaging, highly melodic, never dull.
It's interesting to hear Mays by himself; listening to this album gives you a perspective on the recordings of the Pat Metheny Group. What's revealed is that Mays is a gifted pianist, composer and arranger. His solos in particular are tasteful, colorful, and flowing.
The whole album is pretty good, but my favourites are Teiko, Slink, and the Alaskan Suite (especially "Ascent"). It's just a shame that Mays in his sporadic solo career would never reach these heights again.
