Discogs uses the 'Reggae' term as a catch-all genre to cover a number of styles from the Caribbean. It is a bit inacurate, as styles such as Junkanoo, Ska, and Rocksteady predate Jamaican Reggae, and Calypso and Soca were created and evolved on a different island (Trinidad and Tobago). It was chosen as, and should be understood to be, a compromise, as something that most people would understand.
Reggae music itself is a style that originated in Jamaica in the late 1960s. While sometimes used in a broad sense to refer to most types of popular Jamaican dance music, the term reggae more properly denotes a particular music style that was strongly influenced by traditional mento and calypso music, as well as American jazz and rhythm and blues, and evolved out of the earlier genres ska and rocksteady. Contemporary Reggae is not as raw or vital as the pioneering reggae from the '70s, nor is it as slick as pop reggae. Instead, it falls somewhere between the two, adhering to many of the traditions developed by the '70s... Reggae is a music unique to Jamaïca, but ironically it has its roots in New Orleans R & B. Reggae's direct ancestor is ska, a fast, rhythmic variation based on the Jamaican musicians of New Orleans R & B broadcast from the United States on their transistor radios. Ska was their interpretation of R & B and relied on skitter guitar and syncopated rhythms in the early '60s.
