Mobile Fidelity's first Beatles release.

Early pressings came with a posterboard fold-out insert protecting the LP. On one side is a description of Mo-Fi's background called "An Audiophile's Dream Come True!" and the other side "Superdiscs Supertapes Superstars Super Quality"

Later inserts had a photo of historical-looking figures holding up Mo-Fi LPs stating "Limited Editions From the Original Masters"

Some later copies have a posterboard 4 page b&w foldout insert: front cover reads "Original Master Recordings" at top with an image of a man's back looking at the cover of the Beatles' White Album Original Master Recording. Page 2 has "What Is An Original Master Recording?". Page 3 has a catalog of LPs and cassettes. Back cover has UHQR and Geo-Disc information.

The LP itself is translucent (hold it up to a bright light and you can see through it) and it comes in a paper-line rice paper sleeve.

Runouts: Entire string is stamped, with the exception hand-etching of "SR/2" and the # in the following part of the string: "MFSL-1-023 - $#" (where $ is an letter that is also stamped).

I have this and also a copy of the new Giles Martin mix

The Giles Martin mix is super affordable and sounds amazing, not saying that this record doesn’t sound great but Giles Martin’s mix sounds way better and it’s cheaper.

Really wasnt impressed whatsoever with this record pressing. I have several pressings and this one is bass heavy, volume is all over the place and really doesnt sound good to my ears.

Just picked up a NM copy for a very reasonable price, which I have to say I still nearly didn’t buy as why did I need it? I have to say however I’m really glad I did I think it sounds fantastic just having had a first listen. I also have a UK first press and the 2019 remaster so will have a proper listen to all 3 and see which I prefer and report back..

This is a good release, adjusted the VTA and found the sweet spot. My biggest complaint is it’s not cut hot and has to be driven more than normal. Has a mellow presentation in both the instrumentation and the vocal. It doesn’t get better than the old JVC vinyl, mine is dead quiet. My Blue Box release has this beat as does the Japanese pressed off the UK master. I do enjoy this though, mellow and super quiet vinyl.

Side by side with the 2019 and 1969 pressings, this absolutely pales in comparison sound wise.

Should probably have separate listings for all of the albums in the MFSL box set. It's not that common but they were occasionally parted out and sold individually, with the record being the same as the listing above but the sleeve showing a picture of the master tape instead of the original album artwork. Each sleeve still has their own catalog numbers, again in line with the non-box set numbers, so they really should qualify to have their own listings. It would be sufficient to just expand on this listing, to add the master tape sleeves as a variant, and include photos.

As others have commented, this is a bass-forward mastering from start to finish. On some tracks, the bass can be overly assertive (“Come Together” “Here Comes the Sun” “You Never Give Me Your Money”) On others, the enhanced bass enhances the result (“Maxwell’s Silver Hammer” “She.Cane in Through the Bathroom Window” “Carry That Weight” “The End”)- at least, to my subjective ears. But even when the bass is too forward the listening experience is never bad.

I really enjoyed this pressing. The bass is a little up but I'm a fan of the bass shining through so I liked that it did. I will add that it is not loud coming through but that is what the volume control is for. I was able to pick up a sealed copy at a local record store and I'm really happy I did. Minty fresh.

I would swear to the fact that I purchased this MFSL lp when it came out at the end of Dec. 1979. My original copy still had the shop receipt inside of it along with all the original inserts and original loose fit outer sleeve. Anyone out there now who has this copy, please do me a favor and check the date on the receipt. I feel the release date on this is 1979, not 1980.

The sound quality on this album sounds very "stretched thin" and the bass is boosted to enormous levels. While there is a nice level of detail in the recording, this is by no means a great sounding edition.
