grading, you ask?
here's my interpretation of the goldmine standard ratings,
some remarks what it means for my stuff (vinyl first, cd below):

* mint vinyl:
a truly mint record in a mint sleeve does not exist,
except when bought directly from the distributor & handled carefully.
this grade i use only for 100% top quality, definitely unplayed records.
a record that ever had a needle on it (esp. in a shop!) or was played cannot be mint.
unplayed vinyl without inner sleeves that gathered dust on the open sleeve side cannot be mint.
a cover with creases cannot be mint.
a cover with the tiniest writing on cannot be mint.

* near mint vinyl:
near mint is as good as new, barely played, no visible marks.
no creases in cover or sleeve.
the near mint grade should satisfy every critical collector except some overzealous pedants.
as good as it can get for a record that has seen a turntable.
most 'new' stuff bought from real-life shops looks worse.

* vg+ vinyl:
vg+ is the common rating for a lovingly handled record
that has been played more than, say, half a dozen times.
with maybe some minor markings (for example from pulling out a shitty inner sleeve).
cover might have some minor ringwear or creases.
still worthwhile to the collector.

* vg vinyl:
vg is the rating which could be described as 'used'.
playable, visible marks or scratches, fingerprints,
surface noise apparent in quiet parts & lead-in & run-out grooves.
cover has been used, has creases, maybe some writing on, a cut-out,
maybe partly broken through on the side.
if you want to play this on a pa(rty) to a crowd, fine.
if you want to test your hi-fi equipment, find a better one.

* good / good+ vinyl:
'good' in goldmine standard words to me means 'not good, but acceptable'.
acceptable when you can bear scratches & obvious prior dj-usage.
cover is torn or badly written on.

* generic cover:
generic black or white doublehole sleeves i do not rate.
usually their condition is similar to the record rated.
writing on generic covers doesn't count.
price-tag-rips on generic covers don't count.
since they're generic i don't care much, as long as the inner sleeve is fine.
bad covers i will replace with good enough ones.

* some remarks on general handling:
after adding a record to my collection (bought new or used)
i replace the standard paper inner sleeves with high-quality antistatic silklike sleeves.
i do this for almost all records,
except for some less-than-average vg/g stuff (or for mint ones i have more of of course).
records with non-generic covers are put inside a protective plastic cover.
this helps a lot to maintain the condition it was in when i got it.
i do not dj-use my records either.
i try very carefully to remove pricetags & other stickers when appropriate.

the goldmine standard does not refer to cd's,
so i'll try to explain how i give ratings here:

* mint cd:
preferably factory sealed. if not,
no signs of handling or marks whatsoever,
not even the tiniest ones, even when checked under bright artificial light.
digipaks and booklets have no creases or dents or fingerprints, at all.
i use 'mint' only for stuff that was not played at all.
a used cd could be mint, but often it's not.
stuff i have played myself is 'near mint' at best, even if spotless
(well, if a dozen other sellers offer 'mint',
sometimes i'm tempted to give a 'mint' rating too for a truly spotless cd).

* near mint cd:
cd is spotless. no marks at all.
cd has been played with utmost handling care only.
digipaks and booklets have no creases or dents, maybe a fingerprint.
some other sellers might refer to this condition as 'mint', however i do not. try me.

* vg+ cd:
cd has minor mark(s), visible only under bright artificial light.
digipaks and booklet have minimal creases or dents.
this would be 'near mint' to the untrained eye ;-)

* vg cd:
cd has visible marks or minor scratches. 'used'.
booklets have creases or folds or or dents.
digipaks have worn corners or sides, maybe price stickers or remnants.
digipaks might have some broken plastic holding-pins.
covers with cut-out's, holes in barcode, punchholes are vg only when neatly done & non-prominent.

* good/good+ cd:
usually i don't sell cd stuff i'd rate less than vg.
have done it for *extremely* rare stuff only.

* standard jewelcases/singlecases
i do not rate the condition of the standard cases, but the booklet & back or front inlay.
cases with cracked parts i replace with functional or new ones.

* i do not sell cd's with bad scratches or marks or even skips.
when i say 'plays fine here' i refer to a less than perfect looking cd that plays fine on my cd players.
of course all my cd's i offer here play fine, so maybe i should delete those comments ;-)

* some remarks on general handling:
all digipak-cd's, cardboard-cover-cd's and cd's with release-unique stickers
i store inside a protective plastic cover.
