Ambient Style Overview
Ambient Music Description
Ambient music refers to a kind of music that envelops the listener without drawing attention to itself.
The Term was created in 1978 by Brian Eno's AMBIENT 1 "Music for Airports". Ambient Music must be able to accommodate many levels of listening attention without enforcing one in particular; it must be as ignorable as it is interesting. — Brian Eno (Music for Airports liner notes, September 1978). As ambient music continues to have successive periods of popularity, the amount of material described in this way is huge. Users might wish to consider tags such as Dark Ambient, Drone, New Age, etc, instead of or on conjunction with Ambient, to bring greater clarity to entries.
