Freetekno Style Overview
Freetekno Music Description
Freetekno (also Freetek) is a subculture of the techno movement and has existed since the early 1990s as a countermovement to commercial rave and techno. The scene is organized informally and decentrally in sound systems. The term refers on the one hand to the PA system and on the other hand to the association of people who organize free parties/raves with this system. The sound systems largely build the boxes of their PA themselves, set up this PA independently, put on or play live music and dismantle the system again.
In addition to this specific practice, the term freetekno outlines a certain spectrum of subcultural varieties of electronic music, also referred to as tekno (with a k), or tribe. The latter being a term which is predominantly used in France. Tekno has many subgenres and adjacent genres. Whether a music belongs to Tekno or not is less a question of style than of whether it is played at free parties and whether it was produced out of the context of the scene. Almost all music styles relevant in the freetek(no) field have as a common feature relatively high speeds (in relation to techno styles played in commercial clubs) and in most cases range between 150 and 190 bpm and faster.
