Phonk Style Overview
Phonk Music Description
A subgenre of hip hop that appeared in the 2000s in Southern United States. The sound is usually quite dark, gritty, and lo-fi due to the use of cranked-up bass and distortion effects most often associated with samples of horrorcore tapes. The style gradually evolved, with some production becoming cleaner and uplifting in the 2010s, but they retain the aesthetic and themes that define the style. While originally a rather local scene, its popularity online gave birth to a sizeable following in countries such as Canada and Russia.
