Discogs is born with the digital music era in which every sound file is an entity of its own.
Each sound object itemized and sold in Discogs is an echo of the past, of a time when a collection of tracks were marketed as an album, a single, and so on. Ironically for a free contributor-based project as opposed to its rival from the music industry that is Gracenote's CDDB Database, Discogs stays completely away from the way music is sold nowadays by on demand services. Instead Discogs created a worldwide niche market for old sound artefacts - starting from Édouard-Léon Scott De Martinville - Au Clair De La Lune.
