Don't like this one at all--digital high-end harshness made me take it off the turntable very quickly.
Green Day - American Idiot
posted a review of Green Day - American Idiot. 5 months ago
Thank you so much for the mastering on this one!
I have the original vinyl, but hardly ever played it because the compression on the drums, especially kick & snare, was so hard that I could never turn it up--it hurt at high volumes.
This one tames... See full review

My LP has the same runoff groove info, plus C and T, indicating Columbia Terra Haute press, but with different labels, the black, boxed Dunhill/ABC label.
Bob Seger And The Silver Bullet Band - Night Moves

My copy sounds fine, hardly any tics or pops at all.

However, that link only works for customers in the UK. If you switch to USD, you won't see the VMP pressing, only the 2021 reissue.
Black Sabbath - Sabbath Bloody Sabbath

Harsh digital glare on this release. The combination of the splatter orange color and the custom labels look nice, though.
Motörhead - Ace Of Spades

This pressing kicks all the recent reissues off the map. Essential listening and you can actually hear Lemmy's bass!
Peter Gabriel - Deutsches Album

An excellent pressing, well-mastered as well. Dynamics compare quite favorably to my Target CD of this album (English version).
The Sisters Of Mercy - BBC Sessions 1982-1984

Pressing is pretty noisy, but that aside, it has decent mastering--and best of all, finally a decent studio version of "Jolene".
Siouxsie And The Banshees* - A Kiss In The Dreamhouse

I also have the original German pressing from the 80s, and this blows it off the map. I sure wish the rest of the Banshees catalogue would get remastered using the revised Abbey Road sound processing chain--the ones done before the sound upgrade are... See full review

I have the original US Sire, an original German Sire, the 2011 RSD pressing & this one. This one sounds the best of all--nice full soundstage, nice punchy bass, warm mids and a nice warm EQ on the high end.
Siouxsie And The Banshees* - Nocturne
posted a review of Siouxsie And The Banshees* - Nocturne. 12 months ago
This is the best version of this album that I have heard. I used to have an original German pressing, and this release has better sonic details--AND the treble is not boosted like earlier Banshees reissues done at Abbey Road at half-speed.

The huge irony is that the horrible Plain Records reissue has brilliantly reproduced artwork.

I suggest that you look at bit closer! That is actually a very stylized 3 that you see.

Are you sure it's not a Dutch pressing--that's the only CBS pressing I find.
Ike & Tina Turner - Workin' Together

The runoff grooves on my LP say: LST-7650-SIDE 1 A4 CH and for Side 2: LST-7650-SIDE 2 B6 CH

Label text is all caps for both artist names & the LP title.
John B. Sebastian* - John B. Sebastian

This release mostly sounds great, save for the opening two lines of "How Have You Been", where the vocal distorts noticeably. Otherwise, nice, warm & analog sounding!
Black Sabbath - Technical Ecstasy
posted a review of Black Sabbath - Technical Ecstasy. about 1 year ago
I have to echo the positive review of this pressing, from GZ Media. It sounds fine, though there is a bit of between song groove noise on side 2. Everything is nicely balanced, and yes, Ozzy's vocals sound really good on this pressing.
Love - Out Here

I have a variation of this, with the added label text "Manufactured by Capitol Records, Inc." at the label bottom.
And record 1 is sides 1 & 2, record 2 has sides 3 & 4.

Really good mastering despite the low volume. If you don't have an amp that can crank this disc up, it's time to shop for a better amp!
David Bowie - Toy
posted a review of David Bowie - Toy. about 1 year ago
The pressing quality on this is uneven at best. Disc 2 had to be cleaned several times, because of sticky residue in the grooves, plus multiple scratches that indicate poor quality control at either the pressing or packaging stage.
Metallica - Garage Inc.

My copy doesn't have that glitch, so it might be that a bad batch was pressed.
Eddie Cochran - The Eddie Cochran Memorial Album

Good pressing, except that "Something Else" is only the coda, not the entire song.
P J Harvey* - Uh Huh Her

Optimal is hit & miss at best. Earlier, their quality control was definitely better. My copy is pretty good, but it does have some groove rumble at the start of side 1.

Very noisy pressing, which is a shame, considering the good mastering.
Ian Hunter - Shades Of Ian Hunter - The Ballad Of Ian Hunter & Mott The Hoople

A very nice mid-1970s compilation of Hunter's work, and it sounds pretty good as well, at least on my rig!
XTC - Go 2
posted a review of XTC - Go 2. about 1 year ago
Agree 100% about the sound quality, which is up there with Mobile Fidelity releases. The Go+ tracks are 45rpm, just in case that got overlooked because of all the typing on the labels!
The Cult - The Cult
posted a review of The Cult - The Cult. about 1 year ago
I’ve had this on CD (one of the first ‘brickwalled’ CDs on the market) and on cassette. The cassette handily beats the CD, and this double LP handily beats the cassette—so much more oomph! Very quiet vinyl, especially considering that most similarly... See full review

This one is mastered quite loud on vinyl, compared with 1.Outside, almost like a 45rpm reissue.
Butthole Surfers - Weird Revolution
posted a review of Butthole Surfers - Weird Revolution. about 1 year ago
I can happily report that this vinyl is nice sounding, and in STEREO. Nice flat wax, a bit of low groove rumble on side 1, but not anything worse than some of my typical late 1970s/early 80s platters. Not the loudest mastering due to the long playing... See full review
Ramones - Pleasant Dreams (The New York Mixes)
posted a review of Ramones - Pleasant Dreams (The New York Mixes). about 1 year ago
This definitely sounds like the mixes were all done together, as a work in progress. First 3 songs have the kick drum with too much midrange, so it sounds like a baseball bat smacking a side of pork, but after that, the drums sound much more balanced.... See full review
Wire - Silver / Lead

This sounds fine on my system, good quiet pressing, nice punchy midrange. A few too many mid-slow tunes, but the uptempo ones shine on wax.
Ramones - Rocket To Russia

This is the most fun of all the Ramones' albums - surf punk at its best. Tommy Ramone went out on a high point on this one--his drums sound really great, especially on surf raveups like "Rockaway Beach, Sheena & Surfin' Bird. The guitars have that... See full review

Side note: I used to have an Ortofon 2M Black cartridge, and I got rid of it because it tended to make certain albums sound dry & brittle (Robert Plant - Mighty Rearranger, for example). I much prefer my current Audio Technica cartridges because they... See full review
Lou Reed - Sally Can't Dance

This is arguably the best sounding recording of Lou Reed's 1970s output. I only have this regular Dynaflex US pressing, but the recording sounds good enough to match some Steely Dan recordings of the same period. A few cringe moments here & there, but... See full review

Just listened to this version and two things leap out: it's in mono, basically, with stereo reverb on some drum rolls; and the vinyl needed multiple cleanings just to be playable.

Eliott Scheiner had the multi-track masters of the 1st 5 SD albums ready to remix for either DVD-Audio or SACD in 2003/4, but the idiots at Universal declined to give the go ahead.

A damned shame that this fine album is saddled with such atrocious mixes. Steve Lillywhite went on to much, much better in the way of sonics.

Optimal's quality control has been lacking since '13. I had to play this multiple times before the grooves cleaned out enough to sound decent with no drop-outs due to dust (& possibly vinyl flash residue). Very aggravating, especially if your... See full review

The Psychedelic Furs - The Psychedelic Furs

I was very disappointed in the sound quality of this reissue. The harshness made it a very difficult listen, and it makes me suspect the source was digital, rather than the original stereo master tape(s).
