John Otway And The Big Band (4) - Montserrat DK50-80

March 25, 2017
Nice review John. This album had to be a decent follow up to the awesome Premature Adulation and having listened to it a couple of times now (and watched the DVD) I think Otway et al have done a sterling job! There are songs that instantly grab you and you get a real sense that the Caribbean jaunt has had a definite influence on how this album comes across. It's an eclectic mix of pop, blues, calypso, folk styles and has a nice mix of tempos to keep you interested. I can see how Otters and the band are pleased with the results and justifiably so. Shame there's no vinyl format (yet). OtSwot Kev (aka Pistoleer)

I'm pleased to hear it.
I think recently someone tried to amend my entry on Discogs regarding this putting it down to a wrong cassette in wrong case. I may be wrong here as I haven't checked prior to writing this.
This is even more evidence it should be a standalone entry in the database.

There has been no mention of a black vinyl pressing previously only those pressed on coloured vinyl. I suspect these black vinyl pressings may be a more recent repress but I cannot be sure.

I've discovered my copy TCVD2510 contains the 12 track OVEDC234 cassette. Has anybody else encountered this? Check yours as I don't know if this is the same for all of them.

Not sure about the 'text on the right hand side' theory but in my experience most Jap Promos can be identified by a symbol that looks a bit like a 'christmas tree'. The label image here isn't great but it may be the one in the middle of the three Japanese symbols on the top line to the right of the label.

it's very strange, the matrix on one side is A2 and on the other is B3.Could you explain that

It's not strange at all. It's just another variation on the Master plates used to press the records. Just like A1/B3 that is already listed among others. How these combinations came about I don't know. There may have been more than one machine pressing the records or that's how the plates were mounted . Who knows?

nmycon... sounds like you've got yourself a bargain!! A3/B3 is one of the 1000 and what you describe fits too. :-)

Further to my previous post this gets more confusing. The images posted by Johnny Rotten have red/green labels in a sleeve which omits sub-mission on the reverse. There are no sleeves like this with the red/green labels except the ones that incorrectly list belsen and liar so this is an oddity in itself.

The images at www.sex-pistols.net for the 4th release has the black bordered logo on the sleeve with red/green labels on the disc. However, whilst my sleeve is the same I have the old style blue labels with EMI miscredited to vicious. Thinking mine is a one off I see there's an exact same copy currently for sale on ebay (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/170971967147?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649). Now if we assume that the black bordered copy is the 4th release and used a crossover from blue to red/green labels that's one thing but then where does the release that features here fit in?

I suspect the sleeve images here are wrong. The 4th pressing sleeve has a black border to the Virgin Records logo on the reverse of the sleeve. The 4th pressing images at www.sex-pistols.net has the black logo sleeve with the first green/red labels, however my sleeve contains the old style blue labels and the matrix A9/B7! Confused? me too!

I believe this is the same release that's listed as the '4th' main pressing on this discog. The current '4th' pressing listed I suspect actually should be the 5th. The proper 4th pressing has a black border arouns the Virgin records logo at the bottom of the sleeve on the rear.

Can someone confirm which version of this LP has the BLACK BORDER which surrounds the Virgin records logo at the bottom centre of the rear sleeve? None of the images for all the releases have one pictured here. The matrix number of mine is A8/B6 has 11 tracks on the back with Submission missing. I believe this is the 4th pressing not the one that is pictured as the 4th on this release.

I ahve a copy of this '3rd' issue A8/B6 which is identical in every way except that on the reverse of the sleeve at the bottom the 'Virgin Records Ltd.' text has a black border where it appears a copyright 'c' symbol on the left has been masked. Is this an early typo for this issue?

I have this single in PS with white/blue label A side and silver/blue label B side matrix A6/B6. I also have it without pic sleeve with blue/white labels both sides matrix A7/B8 but there is an additional 'Made in England' on the text around the labels.
