Wil Malone - Old Feet, New Socks (The Many Faces Of Wil Malone 1965-72)
posted a review of Wil Malone - Old Feet, New Socks (The Many Faces Of Wil Malone 1965-72). about 1 month ago
Some of those previously unreleased Wil Malone tracks on disc 3 from April 1971 (not previously on Until The End (The Long Lost Album) either - see bonus tracks on the 2010 Wil Malone CD) sound really great and mellow, like a British Brian Wilson's... See full review

Excellent sunshine pop with The World Keeps Spinnin' excellent blue eyed soul with a Motown groove. Other highlights include The Year Of The Sun and the closing track, both prime, dreamy, mellow sunshine pop.

On my copy the CD booklet isn't printed... See full review

An odd and rather curious release: a gothic tale with a medieval feel.
Gal Costa - Índia
posted a review of Gal Costa - Índia. about 1 year ago
To me Relance is one of the highlights of La Costa's career ... Very sad then that the pressing of this 50th anniversary release has loud cracks (invisible on the vinyl disc) in the intro to precisely that song.

Excellent selection (though sadly missing Show me the way). The Cure cover ends abruptly and that's normal.

Truly excellent selection of a very interesting Venezuelan electronic artist.

2 excellent selections of fine, funky library music ... never amazing, never disappointing either. Remarkably this digipack has space for a booklet but there doesn't seem to be one ... or did I buy an incomplete copy ? There was no hype sticker either.
Various - Folk Funk & Trippy Troubadours Volume One

Exquisite compilation of unknown gems by the esteemed Paul Hillery. Closer in sound to a compilation on Forager or Anthology Recordings than to an AOR compilation or to Mark Pritchard's Feel The Spirit.

A very excellent Tony Allen album and great to see this on vinyl at last. Disappointed to hear several cracking sounds during the silent bits of track D1 on my mint sealed copy.
King Tubby - Crucial Dub

Great music but track 7 skips even if you can't see anything on the compact disc itself ... so not perfectly mastered or printed
Sonny Hennig - Tränengas

Very much an album of its time - bluesy, society contesting singer songwriter pop rock à la Kris De Bruyne

Yes it is uncanny how this debut album reminds of Stereolab ... But it's a well crafted accomplished album all the same. Do investigate !

Underwhelming packaging, like a nineties longbox which was blown up. You won't need your reading glasses ...
Dunkelziffer - In The Night
posted a review of Dunkelziffer - In The Night. over 3 years ago
A hugely disappointing, bland second album after 1983's intrigueing Dunkelziffer - Colours And Soul. Of the 7 tracks 6 haven't aged well and it's only the album closer Oriental Cafe that stands out, so check that track first.
The Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band
posted a review of The Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band. over 3 years ago
Excellent steel band funk in the Mocambo Allstars / The Poets Of Rhythm vein ... but what a strange habit this band has of not printing writing credits on their albums even if they're doing cover versions.

Great music - also for fans of Charles Wright & The Watts 103rd St Rhythm Band - and for a Craft record the pressing is fine ... which is a relief.

Indeed. Great reissue choices, awful quality control ... A case in point is this remaster ... which then got an unlistenably bad press : The Bar-Kays* - Gotta Groove

Splendid music but another disappointing pressing by Universal: brand new, pristine looking, but you can hear minor scratch or bad pressing sounds on A1 & A2. 30 euro but no download either. For lack of quality control, today's vinyl revival sometimes... See full review

Not a spectacular album. Very dated and rather boring, missing sparkle. In retrospect, Wertheimer's best work may be François Wertheimer / Orchidée - L'Une Chante L'Autre Pas for Agnès Varda.

Not an incredible performance nor a very poignant choice of songs ... making this more of a "for completists only" release. The version of O Superman is really excellent, though, and it's intersting to hear la Laurie sing on a number of tracks.

Love what Tidal Waves are doing reissuewise but for the price they charge their pressings should be better. Dust & grainy dirt on the disc means the washing or packaging process are sloppy, and of course those little grains cause damage that's audible.

A compilation for diehard fans only. Lots of jingly jangly riffing and mediocre new wave mannerisms. The two live tracks at the end are actually the best, in their riffy freakout way. Tracks 12, 14 & 15 remind of Tom Verlaine / early solo Colin... See full review
