Don't bother with this - get a NM original CBS pressing (which is what I did after owning this MOV release) - the MOV reissue is a muffled, lifeless affair.

Good sounding record - but then I've not compared it to any other format.

I wholeheartedly agree that this is a beautifully manufactured box set; but I find the mastering of the songs to sound rather congested, with recessed mids, blunted treble, a two-dimensional soundstage.

It doesn't sound as good as it feels, imho.

Side 2 is unquestionably a more impressive recording - whether this represents the musicians coming into their own, the sound engineer finding his vibe, or an issue with mastering/stampers, who the f**k knows?!

None of the skips or pops others have ... See full review

My UK press is top notch (apart from superglue like static on unsealing which seems typical of GZ, but goes away after a good clean)

For anyone considering this pressing in lieu of the challenges of finding '69 or '70s pressings that don't just look glossy, but actually are quiet players with a stylus in the groove, this is a great sounding record.

HTM mastered at, perhaps, the last ... See full review

What most surprised me about this record - after I finally found one at a good price - is how good it sounds, given how much music is crammed onto each side... Not f**kin' bad at all!

I'm going to respectfully disagree and say this is one of the worst sounding records in my collection.

Great songwriting with great musicians... but this pressing fails to do justice to all that.

Rather congested sounding, little dynamic range, fatiguing on the ears after just a song or two. Sad to say the CD is an improvement :(

Wonderful sounding version of this classic bit of Haines - the 3 Loop repress is awful, btw.

Get one of these.

One of the worst sounding records in my collection: pinched, flat soundstage; no air or dynamics; vocals sound thin. The 2001 Further Listening CD reissue sounds far superior. It would seem that no special mastering was applied to render the master ... See full review

I haven't listened to the CD... so I make no claims regarding the comparative quality between CD and vinyl.

My set up is fine, since great records sound great, good records sound good, average records sound average, etc.

I can't comment on the remaster/reissue, but my Near Mint original pressing is an exquisite and beautiful sounding record - present, detailed, 3-dimensional soundscape.

Listened to this back to back with a near mint original UK pressing and I would say its only SLIGHTLY worse... which is pretty cool.

I haven't listened to any other vinyl editions, but UK original sounds - to me - rather flat and one dimensional. There is no air around the songs, no micro detail, no sense of depth to the soundstage.

I've always found the CD to be rather shrill, too. ... See full review

This is probably the dullest record in my collection.

Something has happened to re-master all of the music out of the songs. It's a vacant, hollow, one dimensional sound - a sterile veil wrapped around the music.

I've been waiting to see how this issue was received, as I have the MOV reissue and its terrible (quiet on the surface noise front, but terribly compressed) - looks like an original copy is still the way to go!

Concur with everyone below: this LP is possibly best 'common-or-garden' modern vinyl pressing I own.

No fancy audiophile label. Mass sold on Amazon.

But just f**king brilliant sounding!

I picked up this press for £46 on eBay.... Amazed at how outstandingly beautiful a 40-yr-old piece of (rather thin) vinyl can sound. Not an archive copy. Sold at VG+. I cleaned it on an RCM with L'Art du Son.

Presumably across those 40 years the record ... See full review

I heard a lot more (in the rather average songs) than I did no CD.

Crystal clear, stable, deep, lush, expansive.... lovely pressing.

Horrible congested mix, zero dynamic range - very odd given that most of the songs have been decently remastered by RS for their home albums.

This compilation is just shit really.
