Open Source (2) - A Walk On The Ceiling
posted a review of Open Source (2) - A Walk On The Ceiling. about 1 year ago
I like this guy's music, but his newer releases have been confusing me a bit, with a lot of albums containing tracks that already came out in 2013-2014. This one appears to be some kind of compilation as well, with "A Great Dream" and "From Athens... See full review

Cynic (2) - Ascension Codes
posted a comment on Cynic (2) - Ascension Codes. over 3 years ago
While it's true that the production isn't clear, sounding overly reverberant, the music itself here is fascinatingly different from previous Cynic recordings. This is a highly ambitious progressive album that has more in common with Magma than... See full review
DJ Masala - Astronauts In The Solar System

Would have to disagree w/ the other reviewer here, like all Global Sect VAs this is top quality modern goa trance, heavily melodic, with many layers of arpeggiated lead lines intersecting. Many artists on this VA have grown from their earlier work... See full review

Unfortunate press release, sure, but I find the music original enough. If anything it is more comparable to Cydonia. dark goa was a small and precious niche
Coil + Zos Kia + Marc Almond - How To Destroy Angels
posted a review of Coil + Zos Kia + Marc Almond - How To Destroy Angels. over 6 years ago
Here we have an uncut, longer version of Coil's first ever live performance from 1983, released originally on the "Transparent" CD and the previous "How to Destroy Angels" CD, which have already been remastered and re-issued before, as recently as... See full review
Various - Enormously High
posted a review of Various - Enormously High . over 6 years ago
Completely banging psytrance. High level production with the resonant, harmonic rich, layered sound we have come to expect in recent years from labels such as Sangoma and Purple Hexagon. This is absolutely peak time material, unapologetically... See full review

Coil - Constant Shallowness Leads To Evil
posted a review of Coil - Constant Shallowness Leads To Evil. over 9 years ago
If you think this album is 'not music', or 'thrown together', all I can say is, you must never have heard it on acid.

This is one of the most powerful and profound expressions of a manic state that I have ever heard. Coil means every sound gesture... See full review

"it is not often that one can say that a track within the twilight style can get better with repeat listens"

I find this to be a very confusing statement. This hypnotic, minimal and layered form of music is often ONLY enjoyable on repeated listens,... See full review
N3xu5 - Body Beats
posted a review of N3xu5 - Body Beats. over 9 years ago
I'm going to have to agree with the general low ratings here - this album is bad. Not sounding much like the booming hard full on tracks by N3xu5 found on many VAs, this album is an extremely formulaic daytime full on sound, and truthfully, it... See full review
Suria - Dark Side Of The Sun

In my opinion this is one of the greatest psytrance disks ever recorded, the absolutely epitome of sonically massive, immersive texture with pulsating layered space. An early album of the 'darkpsy' scene, this album is my favorite kind of music that... See full review
Gaudium - Stories Of A Viking

This is not a very interesting album. The production is quite good, but the songs are formulaic and feel unemotional compared with Ace Ventura's new album "Paradise Engineering". Some of the breakdowns in these tracks seem to last forever, and... See full review
Francisco López - Presque Tout (Quiet Pieces 1993-2013)
posted a comment on Francisco López - Presque Tout (Quiet Pieces 1993-2013). over 9 years ago
These 'pieces' are so quiet that they are completely inaudible 99% of the time, even on headphones, turned up very loud, in a near-silent environment (save lights and a fridge).

Any audio engineer with some sense knows that it's best to mix as loud... See full review

top quality twilight full on, if only every album has mastering this perfectly compressed, massive, and rounded on top.

I used to hold a similar view of this EP as the other reviewer who calls it confused. For years I considered a noisy mess. However, it's simply closer to mind altering psychedelic noise and field recording collage than the orderly constructions of... See full review

Various - Hospitality Drum & Bass 2013
posted a comment on Various - Hospitality Drum & Bass 2013. over 9 years ago
this is the most ear fatiguing and harsh loudness wars type mastering I've ever heard. The high end is needlessly shrill, it even sounds like they may have applied an aural exciter to the entire mix just to give it 'bite'. In case you don't know,... See full review
Spacewalker - Tenerife Dream

the production on this album is expertly done IMO. there's a lot of electronic stuff out there from this era that had no grasp of compression or EQ like these musicians did. It's far from simple.
S>Range - 2001

As a massive psyhead, this album is one of the best psy albums ever made, and it's a shame the average rating is below 4/5. The mastering on this is so delicious, so ear pleasing, that I feel thousands of producers would do well to take notes. This... See full review

The Cyclobe tune can similarly be found on their album "Wounded Galaxies Tap at the Window", which I highly recommend.
posted a review of Various - Tesserae 1.0. over 9 years ago
The involvement of industrial and ritual soundscape artists like TAGC, Arktau Eos and The Psychogeographical Commission prompted me to investigate this compilation. Unfortunately, a lot of the album is 2nd rate imitation of what groups like Coil did... See full review

One of the best albums of ALL TIME in my book. Though this may sound similar to other psytrance to the untrained ear, hidden beneath is an astounding psychedelic journey. Overdream is a visionary, and has proved it again many times over since 2011... See full review

IMO this is Necton's best album, and I've loved all of their albums.

Rather than embrace any of the new styles of Psytrance or their production techniques, this album feels like it could have come from the late 90's / early 2000's, featuring tasty... See full review
