The Small Faces* - The Immediate Story - Small Faces Volume II
posted a review of The Small Faces* - The Immediate Story - Small Faces Volume II. about 7 hours ago
This compilation contains most (but not quite all) the songs from the THERE ARE BUT FOUR SMALL FACES and THE SMALL FACES (Immediate) albums. It's got a couple of tracks from OGDENS' NUT GONE FLAKE, three selections from the Newcastle City Hall... See full review
The Twinkle Brothers* - Since I Throw The Comb Away (Live At Reggae Sunsplash)
posted a review of The Twinkle Brothers* - Since I Throw The Comb Away (Live At Reggae Sunsplash). 2 days ago
At times you might forget this is a live album, the band is so tight and the harmonies are so strong. Excellent recording, and one of the best live reggae albums I've ever heard. Impassioned vocals throughout, "Since I Throw The Comb Away" is a... See full review
Nick Lowe - The Impossible Bird
posted a review of Nick Lowe - The Impossible Bird. 2 days ago
My favorite Nick Lowe album, and this pressing sounds very nice, the vinyl is quiet and flat, the music is warm and intimate, but the packaging is bare-bones, with several photos and some amusing text not ported over from the original release. But... See full review
Dr. Lonnie Smith* - All In My Mind
posted a review of Dr. Lonnie Smith* - All In My Mind. 8 days ago
I do question the choices of songs selected for this Tone Poet pressing, but what's here sounds amazing, there's some nice diversity to the selections, and the pressing itself is impeccable. There's some serious depth to the low end, and a purity to... See full review
The Waterboys - Room To Roam
posted a review of The Waterboys - Room To Roam. 9 days ago
Found a sealed copy marked down to $15 at a local shop. This is easily one of the best sounding records in my collection. "A Month Of Sundays" in particular blew me away, it's such a vast improvement on the 1990 US Chrysalis CD. Just a fantastic... See full review
The Temptations - Psychedelic Shack
posted a review of The Temptations - Psychedelic Shack. 16 days ago
Bought this on a whim, as it was cheap, and I was curious. It's an excellent album. Not quite as psychedelic as Sly & The Family Stone's fusion of soul and rock, and still unmistakably Motown, but an adventurous effort that rewards repeated... See full review
The Trout (2) - The Trout
posted a review of The Trout (2) - The Trout. 17 days ago
Vocals are reminiscent of The Mamas & The Papas at times, but this is on the MGM label, so it's considerably less hip and more cheesy. Not bad, but not really distinctive. Got this as a freebie with some other records, still sealed, and the pressing... See full review
Love - Forever Changes
posted a review of Love - Forever Changes. 24 days ago
This is an excellent pressing, with plenty of low end, a great deal of warmth to the acoustics, and a very full, detailed, huge soundstage. I love the arrangements on this album, and they really come alive throughout this pressing. My copy was... See full review
Johnny Lytle - Everything Must Change
posted a review of Johnny Lytle - Everything Must Change. about 1 month ago
Nice set of tunes from Johnny Lytle, featuring Big John Patton on organ. Highlights include "Lela" and an update to his own classic, "The Village Caller". This pressing sounds terrific, with great depth to the low end, and a wide, detailed and... See full review
Ramsey Lewis - Mother Nature's Son
posted a review of Ramsey Lewis - Mother Nature's Son. about 1 month ago
This is one of the few records in my collection that I actually held out for a copy with a VG+ or better cover, because I love that album cover. The music is also fantastic, is there a better example of the inventive arrangements and musicianship of... See full review
Gloria Coleman Ltd. - Sings And Swings Organ
posted a review of Gloria Coleman Ltd. - Sings And Swings Organ. about 1 month ago
Inconsistent but occasionally excellent, SINGS AND SWINGS ORGAN is highlighted by "Bugaloo For Ernie", "Fungi Mama" and "Blue Bossa". Three of the eight selections (A2, A4, B2) include Coleman's vocals, and...well, I enjoy the instrumentals much... See full review
Milt Jackson - Live At The Museum Of Modern Art
posted a review of Milt Jackson - Live At The Museum Of Modern Art. 2 months ago
If you're a Milt Jackson fan, this album is a must-have. Maybe not this pressing, though. The performance is inspired and the mood is infectious, James Moody plays some of the most beautiful flute I've ever heard. "The Quota", "Turquoise",... See full review

HERE IT 'TIS was recorded in September 1970, and it's another in a string of solid soul jazz sessions Smith did for Prestige. Highlights include "The Nubs" and the title track, and guitarist James Clark contributes some tasty guitar solos to covers of... See full review

For the uninitiated, imagine Zappa, Zeppelin, Hendrix and Sly & The Family Stone having a baby. Also, this album must be played loud. The louder you play it, the better it gets. This pressing sounds really good, way better than the old Westbound CD... See full review

posted a review of Richard "Groove" Holmes - Book Of The Blues Vol. 1. 3 months ago
The big band arrangements of Onzy Matthews can't even drown out Groove Holmes on this 1964 release. Highlights include "I'd Rather Drink Muddy Water", "How Long How Long Blues" and "Roll 'Em Pete". This mono pressing offers acceptable sound,... See full review
Jimmy McGriff - City Lights
posted a review of Jimmy McGriff - City Lights. 3 months ago
CITY LIGHTS was McGriff's debut release for the tiny JAM label, and it's a solid album culled from a pair of sessions in December 1980 and January 1981. "Brickyard" and the title track are highlights, there's also a nice cover of "My Way". No issues... See full review

Kenny Burrell With The Brother Jack McDuff Quartet - Crash!

Highly enjoyable session recorded in 1963, with Burrell playing second fiddle to McDuff on most tracks, but still getting plenty of tasty licks in the mix. Highlights include "Grease Monkey", "Nica's Dream", "Call It Stormy Monday" and "We'll Be... See full review

posted a review of Paul And Linda McCartney* - Ram. 3 months ago
I didn't really think my old Apple US pressing from the early 70s sounded that bad, but this blows it out of the water. More dynamic overall, better separation, wider soundstage, more oomph to the vocals, and lots of little details I never really... See full review

Things don't get off to a great start with a hesitant cover of "Ode To Billie Joe", but every single one of the other four tracks is a keeper. The band is fantastic, the grooves are slinky. I could not sit still to "Peepin'" and "The Humpback", and... See full review
Billy Joel - Glass Houses

GLASS HOUSES might be a five-star album in my book were it not for the utterly pretentious "C'Etait Toi (You Were The One)". As it is, it's a great album with one craptastic song. If memory serves, Joel was fed up with critics saying he couldn't... See full review

I paid three bucks for this, and it's worth it just for "Long Long Time" alone. Solid no-frills hits collection, and this pressing sounds fine, even "Different Drum" sounds nice. My copy looks and plays clean and quiet with no noticeable surface noise.

This looks to be a very old 12" LP, likely from the early 1950's. The record jacket is very sturdy, with a textured front cover. The back cover layout reminds me of the classic Blue Note albums of the 50's. The music is quite lovely, and this red... See full review

This might not be the best live album by The Kinks, but it's still a solid effort, with a heavy emphasis on more recent material - only "Apeman" dates from before 1981. and there are a pair of new songs, "The Road" and "It". Highlights include "Art... See full review
