Dire Straits - Love Over Gold
posted a review of Dire Straits - Love Over Gold. 2 months ago
Not quite as punchy as the vinyl, but way less noise - so this release is a bit of a trade-off. A little bright for my taste, but still better than any other current CD or SACD edition.
The Beatles - Abbey Road
posted a review of The Beatles - Abbey Road. 3 months ago
Yes it’s balanced, but it’s too clinical for my taste. The original mix had a live feel about it, and that’s what’s missing in this mix. Obviously all these things are personal taste, and I don’t think it’s necessarily related to set-up.
My Morning Jacket - Evil Urges
posted a review of My Morning Jacket - Evil Urges. 4 months ago
Spacious, great bass, though the whole recording has a somewhat veiled sound about it. This issue is across all MMJ releases, so it must be a mixing / production style decision. Pressing is noisy - GZ / Precision have not been able to fine-tune... See full review
Various - Meatloaf & Friends - Their Ultimate Top 40 Collection
posted a review of Various - Meatloaf & Friends - Their Ultimate Top 40 Collection. 4 months ago
A bit of a hot mess, with poor track sequencing, and inconsistent mastering. The Ultimate Top 40 series is a good concept, but it has been poorly executed, and the ability to obtain consistent quality masters, its Achilles tendon. Tracks from Bat Out... See full review
Various - PWL Extended (Big Hits And Surprises Vols.1 & 2)
posted a review of Various - PWL Extended (Big Hits And Surprises Vols.1 & 2). 4 months ago
A mixed bag - some classics, and some shockers. Mastering is all over the place, and not particularly good. No purpose has been served by releasing this on Blu-Ray - it would have better to simply place these tracks onto a multi-disc CD rekease.
ABBA - The Album
posted a review of ABBA - The Album. 4 months ago
There are three vinyl releases out of Japan, all with the same matrix codes. Having purchased and listened to the UK, US, Norway & the recent Abbey Rd half-speed edition, this pressing is definitely the clear winner. Soundstage is wide, mastering is... See full review
Carol Lynn Townes - Believe In The Beat

Another noisy US Polydor pressing - try and source a German or UK pressing wherever possible. Mastering and mix is great - Jellybean was at the top of his game during this era.
Blue Pearl - Naked In The Rain
posted a review of Blue Pearl - Naked In The Rain. 5 months ago
Timeless classic that sounds as good today as when it was released. Excellent pressing and mastering - (B-side) bottom/end is spectacular.
My Morning Jacket - Z
posted a review of My Morning Jacket - Z. 5 months ago
Sound quality is all over the place. Side A - excellent. Side B track 1 is compressed to hell, and the mix is absolute shite. The rest of Side B is extremely ordinary. The record needs a full remix and remaster - my guess is the album was not well... See full review
The Communards - Never Can Say Goodbye

A timeless 80s classic that never tires. Great mix & mastering by Shep, though the pressing is on low-grade vinyl - MCA were one of the worst offenders.
Roberta Flack - Love Songs
posted a review of Roberta Flack - Love Songs. 6 months ago
Although not a comprehensive overview of Flack’s career, this is the best-sounding release to date.
Prince - Ultimate
posted a review of Prince - Ultimate. 6 months ago
A woeful track selection ruins what should have been a 101 basic overview of Prince’s extensive career. Mastering is excellent - the problem is the album is missing a significant chunk of critical tracks. The extended tracks should have been moved to... See full review

Balanced / warm analogue mastering. Pressing is quiet and artwork faithful to the original.
Ritz - Locomotion

A super-fun interpretation of the classic Goffin/King collaboration. Production is poor and mastering is woeful. You’re only buying this for the memories.

Stupendous release on all accounts. The pinnacle of how all classical records should be presented. Bravo 👏
David Gray - The Best Of David Gray

Reasonable pressing - very dirty out of the jacket and needs a thorough clean. A lot of surface marks which do not affect playback, and my pressing was also warped. Definitely not one of Optimal’s better efforts. Mastering is good, and artwork /... See full review
Supertramp - Breakfast In America

Only repeating what’s already been said here. Great sound stage / quiet pressing / superb sonics. Artwork is vivid, with a sturdy jacket and great liner notes. No need to pay more for the ‘82 MOFI, however if you after the 2018 edition - which is IMHO... See full review

Donna Summer - Another Place And Time
posted a review of Donna Summer - Another Place And Time. about 1 year ago
Very disappointing - this is the budget cousin to the 30th Anniversary edition. Bass is more prominent, with the top-end heavily rolled-off. Definition is missing in action - the record can’t breathe it’s so compressed. This hasn’t been cut at Abbey... See full review

Diana Ross & The Supremes* - The # 1's
posted a review of Diana Ross & The Supremes* - The # 1's. about 1 year ago
Great sounding compilation - of all the different Supremes’ releases, this is probably the best, and sits very closely next to the 1984 20 Greatest Hits, which was transferred from the Original Master Tapes. This is a cleaned-up version, if you’re... See full review

Just awful. God knows what masters they worked from, but they are a long long way from the originals.
Cliff Richard - Platinum Collection
posted a review of Cliff Richard - Platinum Collection. about 1 year ago
Absolute junk. Zero, and I mean zero bass. Shrill / fatiguing mastering. I could have done a better job with a $99 plug-in.
Lionel Richie - Running With The Night
posted a review of Lionel Richie - Running With The Night. about 1 year ago
Fantastic track from Lionel’s best album. Mix is great / essentially an extended version. Vinyl pressing is quiet with solid dynamics, though artwork is cheap and tacky.
Aretha Franklin - Who's Zoomin' Who
posted a review of Aretha Franklin - Who's Zoomin' Who. about 1 year ago
Aretha and Narada at their finest. This is the best track from the album of the same name, and sees Aretha in full flight - no one can ad lib like the Queen of Soul. Mastering in sides a & b differ - side A sounds great, whereas side B sounds... See full review

Good pressing / solid EQ, though the release feels cheap due to poor packaging. Not good enough for a 50th edition.
Prince - Dirty Mind

Superb on all accounts. The current Prince reissues sound fantastic, and the pressing quality is generally flawless. Artwork and inner sleeves are also faithful to the originals.
ABC - The Lexicon Of Love
posted a review of ABC - The Lexicon Of Love. about 1 year ago
A slightly mixed bag here. Side A sounds a little boxed-in; especially tracks 1 & 2, but I’m guessing that’s a feature of the original recording, as Side B sounds fantastic. I’ve compared Side A with an OG and recent remaster, and they have a similar... See full review

The Japan 2007 200g vinyl edition is way more detailed than this edition - the only caveat being this release is a quieter pressing.

Really poor packaging on this release - ringwear issues due to inadequate sleeve thickness. A pretty major screw-up that should never have happened. However we are here for the sound quality, and it’s top-notch. For both the casual or Stones’ fan,... See full review
Bob Dylan - Blood On The Tracks

I found this to be a very satisfying spin. Ticks all the right boxes, and it’s a clean pressing - for a change. The music speaks for itself - it’s Dylan’s best album, never bettered.
Dusty Springfield - Dusty In Memphis
