Plain sleeves versus full artwork sleeves are valid Unique Releases for the database.

Being sure that an item was released both ways is harder, but IMHO we are better to allow the variation in than get too strict about that - if facts arise later on we can adjust as appropriate.

Variations in company sleeves I'd say are not worthy of a Unique Release is that is the only thing that changed, unless there was some important significance in the change.

Lacquers with F numbers (ending in F-1, mastered in Hollywood) pressed by Capitol Records Pressing Plant, Los Angeles with six-star asterisk stamped onto deadwax; lacquers with P and T numbers (i.e. T2, mastered in New York) pressed by Capitol Records Pressing Plant, Scranton with 'IAM' in a triangle stamped onto deadwax - both plants used label typesetting supplied by Los Angeles.
higher lacquer numbers in 'W' and 'X' would have been seen on Jacksonville pressings.

Hollywood: Mono - F/G, H/J (pre-1967); Stereo - A/B, H (after 1967)/J (after 1969) [NOTE: In 1968, J was used for lacquers for The Beatles' "White Album" that were apparently cut at the Sound Recorders Studio where George Harrison supervised the cuttings]
New York: Mono - P/T; Stereo - W/X

2. * in the matrix = Capitol's Los Angeles factory

13.1.5. Covers should be added only if they are artwork (no scans of plain sleeves please!). For releases enclosed in or including generic artwork, this artwork can be added, but the primary image must be the center label information, or other such image that shows the most non-generic, release specific information. If available, CD / DVD etc booklets and other goodies are acceptable as well. Picture discs, colored vinyl, and other interesting media should be photographed as clearly as possible, preferably without flash.

mossinterest page is good for pressing plant codes

(ac) = "SUBSIDIARY OF CAPITOL..." with Capitol logo on the sliced side
(as) = "MFD. BY APPLE" on the sliced side
(af) = "MFD. BY APPLE" on the full side
(ab) = "MFD. BY APPLE" on both sides
(ar) = "MFD. BY APPLE" with "unauthorized duplication" disclaimer on one or both sides (location varies by factory)

For the "Hey Jude" single only, the (as) variation is original.
True first pressings are missing the matrix number and the George Martin credit.
Later in 1968, Capitol decided to use the (ac) Capitol logo on Apple pressings of artists that were signed to Capitol -- including the Beatles. However, this was not standard everywhere.
The Beatles LP -- (ac) was used first
True first pressings have typesetting errors on 3 of the 4 sides
Wonderwall Music LP -- (as) was used first (apparently since George was not signed to Capitol as a solo artist); (ac) used later by Jax plant only
Two Virgins LP -- special labels, not made by Capitol-related printers. (as) only
Yellow Submarine LP -- (ac) was used first at all plants
"Get Back" single -- (ac) was used first at all plants
"Ballad of John and Yoko" -- (ac) was used first at all plants
That's the Way God Planned It LP (Billy Preston) -- (ac) used first at Jacksonville plant only
"Something" single -- (ac) used first at Jacksonville plant only
Abbey Road LP -- (ac) used first at Winchester plant only
True first pressings do not have "Her Majesty" on the label or cover
"More Apples ... Co-Op Ads" -- only pressing has (ac)
Live Peace in Toronto LP -- (ac) used first at Jacksonville plant only
Hey Jude LP -- (as) used first by all plants; (ac) used later at Jax plant only
The Magic Christian LP (Badfinger) -- (ac) used first at Jax plant only
McCartney LP -- (ac) used first by Jax plant only
"Let it Be" single -- (ac) used first at all plants, including some contract pressings
Let it Be LP -- (af) red label used on all Apple pressings
"Long and Winding Road" single -- (ac) used at LA plant and by RCA only
"Govinda" single -- (ac) used first at Jax plant only

Beginning in Fall, 1970, and continuing to Spring, 1971, Capitol began a transition to the (af) label for all releases.

In May, 1971, all Beatles back-catalog records that had been on Capitol switched to Apple. The Jax and LA plants used up all (ac) labels on these releases, through about June, 1971.

Ram LP -- (ac) on Jax pressings only

From here on, once a factory ran out of (as) labels they stopped using them and started using the newer (af) labels for all releases.

Exception: in 1974, the Winchester plant received a shipment of (as) LP labels, which they used on every LP that they made for a brief time -- including releases of some of the back catalog.

The "all rights" label appeared from September, 1975, to January, 1976.
Exception: Since the "red" and "blue" albums had custom labels, Capitol continued to use the "all rights" labels until they were all used up. This didn't happen until perhaps 1980.

DATING RCA VICTOR Records
Before 1955 RCA used the first 2 characters of the 4-character master no. prefix of both company issues and custom pressings* to encode the year -- this is either the year of the actual recording, or the year the master disk was cut. The first character is a letter to indicate the decade (since 1900): C = 1930; D = 1940; E = 1950. The second character, a numeral, indicates the year within the decade. For example:
D8 = 1948
D9 = 1949
E0 = 1950
E1 = 1951
E2 = 1952
E3 = 1953
E4 = 1954

If the code indicates a date before 1949, we can be reasonably sure it refers to the original recording date.

Beginning in 1955 only the first character of the prefix was reserved for the year. Some letters were skipped, likely to avoid ambiguity. The numbering system was abandoned in 1974.
F = 1955
G = 1956
H = 1957
J = 1958
K = 1959
L = 1960
M = 1961
N = 1962
P = 1963
R = 1964
S = 1965
T = 1966
U = 1967
W = 1968
X = 1969
Z = 1970
A = 1971
B = 1972
C = 1973
D = 1974

For further details of the master no. prefix see under the heading, RCA Victor Number-Letter Codes (19501974) toward the bottom of this page: http://www.ronpenndorf.com/labelography4.html

N.B. Many early RCA Victor records from 1949-early '50s do not observe this numbering system, for example RCA Victor 48-0001, "Texarkana Baby"/"Bouquet Of Roses" by Eddy Arnold. This record's sides are numbered 48-0001-A and 48-0001-B, and do not offer a hint to the date.

Among the other plants used by Polydor (for both LP's and 45's) in that period included:
- Columbia Record Productions, Pitman, NJ (56) and Terre Haute, IN (73) (their Santa Maria, CA plant [25] handled pressings for them in the late 1970's)
- Philips/PRC Recording Corp., Richmond, IN (72) (also, after late 1970's, Compton, CA [26])
- Capitol Custom Pressings, Scranton, PA (to late 1973) and Winchester, VA (I saw a copy of a 45 of James Brown's "Sexy, Sexy, Sexy," PD-14194, pressed there)
- North American Music Industries, Scranton, PA (plant spun off in late 1973 from Capitol)
- Shelley Products, Huntington Station, NY (54) (by this time, their "pop-off" 45 labels were but a thing of the past)
- Sonic Recording Products/Goldisc Record Mfg., Holbrook, NY (16) (typesetting on early 1970's pressings from Progressive Label Co., Brooklyn, NY)
- Specialty Records Corp., Olyphant, PA (49)
- Hauppauge Record Mfg. (ex Keel Mfg.), Hauppauge, NY
- Bestway Products, Mountainside, NJ (19)
- Presswell Records Mfg. Co., Ancora, NJ (18)
- RCA Custom Records, Indianapolis, IN (70)
- Allied Record Co., Los Angeles, CA (22)
- Plastic Products Co., Memphis, TN (30)
Incidentally, their code for Monarch was (24)
The numbers in parentheses or brackets are the known codes used by PolyGram beginning in 1979 to indicate which plant was pressing for them.

LP label example (Led Zeppelin I)
ST-A-681461-MO

ST = stereo
A = Atlantic Records label
68 = last two digits of the year Atlantic first received source (tape) and started working on mastering
1461 = tape master number (for side one in this example)
MO = Monarch Records pressing plant

POLYGRAM:
Starting in the mid-1970s and continuing into the late 1980's, the center labels of US PolyGram sublabels began showing two-digit number ID codes signifying from which pressing plant the record originated. A partial list of confirmed plants and their corresponding numbers are as follows:
6 = All Disc Records, Inc.
16 = Sonic Recording Products, Inc. (pre-ca. 1975), Goldisc Recording Products, Inc. (1975 to ca. 1983), Electrosound Group Midwest, Inc. (post-ca. 1983)
18 = Presswell
19 = Bestway Products Inc.
22 = Allied Record Company
24 = Monarch Record Mfg. Co.
25 = Columbia Records Pressing Plant, Santa Maria
26 = PRC Recording Company, Compton, CA
49 = Specialty Records Corporation
53 = Keel Mfg. Corp. (pre-1981), Hauppauge Record Manufacturing Ltd. (post-1981)
54 = Shelley Products
56 = Columbia Records Pressing Plant, Pitman
57 = Columbia Records Pressing Plant, Carrollton, GA (post-1981)
60 = Sound Makers
70 = RCA Records Pressing Plant, Indianapolis
72 = PRC Recording Company, Richmond, IN (post-Dec. 1972)
73 = Columbia Records Pressing Plant, Terre Haute
76 = Hub-Servall Record Mfg. Corp. (post-1970)
There are some numeral codes which have so far been unconfirmed as to their corresponding pressing plants, including 30 (either Plastic Products or Peter Pan Industries) and 75 (presumably MCA Pressing Plant, Pinckneyville); plus other manufacturing codes (i.e. for cassettes) including 12 and 35.

DEADWAX

CUTTING LETTERS (following the tape master number in the deadwax):
These letters indicate the lacquer cutting for that particular pressing, with A being the first, and B the second, and so on.

An additional letter, always the same letter as the first cutting letter (but usually fainter) sometimes appears on Monarch pressings. Two additional letters, always the same letters as the first (usually fainter) may appear on RI pressings. These extra letters indicate an additional metal part made from the lacquer.

Also, on "AR" pressings, the cutting letter is replaced with a handwritten delta symbol.

For some promotional cuts with different banding and mastering, the cutting letter is replaced by "DJ"

OTHER SCRIBINGS IN THE DEADWAX

AT = Mastered by/for Atlantic

AT/GP (handwritten) = mastered by George Piros at Atlantic

AT/DK (handwritten) = mastered by Dennis King at Atlantic

ATLANTIC STUDIOS DK (stamped) = mastered by Dennis King at Atlantic

RG = Rob Grennell, mastering engineer for Atlantic in the late 60s

ab = Abbey Record Mfg. Co. (? we still don't know the exact meaning)

PR or PRC or (PR) = Philips Recording Co. (maker of metal parts from lacquers)

LW or LWP = LongWear Plating (maker of metal parts from lacquers)

MG = MGM Record Mfg. Division in Bloomfield, NJ
AMP = ABC-Paramount
M = Mercury
RCA = RCA Victor (on some contract pressings of Elvis' 1956 smash hits)

Records pressed by Specialty Records Corp. will have a stamped logo in the deadwax, consisting of a 'R' and 'C' intertwined in a larger letter 'S'. Also, records pressed at Specialty may contain a hand etched date in the deadwax. The date represents when the record was either plated at Specialty, or the date they received the lacquer from the mastering studio (there was a time in the 1971-72 period when that plant wrote dates on the deadwax of many a lacquer, both on LP's and 45's; this practice apparently didn't last all that long).

Lastly, records made by Monarch will have a stamped circle with "MR" in it, and numbers preceded by a delta sign. As for numbers with the delta symbol on the deadwax - this apparently originated with the company that did plating on the West Coast (Alco Research & Engineering in Los Angeles), and their system was used by a host of L.A.-area plants including their own, plus Monarch and another plant called AFM Engineering.
