Joni Mitchell - The Reprise Albums (1968-1971)
posted a comment on Joni Mitchell - The Reprise Albums (1968-1971). about 1 year ago
I too got that exact same issue in my Optimal pressed box. I had to get two replacements of ‘Song to a Seagull’ before I finally got one without this pressing defect (which is not non-fill proper, rather it is ‘stitching’ where the stamper has bits of... See full review

Incredibly noisy/dirty vinyl, and alas, this is what we have gotten used to from Warp. Will Warp ever care?

No they are not on the master tape. They are defects somewhere in the chain.

Got this boxset today, and with great expectations got into listening to it. I was off to a bad start immediately, as side A of ‘Song to a Seagull’ was filled with non-fill across all of the side. The type of non-fill was the ‘string of pearls’ and... See full review

Same issue here. I have the EU version. If you indeed have the RTI pressing then it must be defective lacquer or metalwork.
Spiritualized Electric Mainline* - Pure Phase
posted a comment on Spiritualized Electric Mainline* - Pure Phase. about 1 year ago
Now that is definitely not true ‘the whole truth’. The lore about the two mixdowns edited down to one is plausible on some of the tracks, but not all. Many of the tracks sound normal compared to eg. Medication which is probably the weirdest sounding... See full review
Spiritualized Electric Mainline* - Pure Phase

I have now compared this pressing to the 1995 CD version, and this pressing sounds just as weird as the CD does. On some tracks (eg. Medication) the stereo spread is too narrow, the sound stage weirdly diffused lacking both bass and treble, with... See full review
Seefeel - Succour (Redux)

Sounds mega. Bass lovers will not be disappointed, and the treble is thankfully not hyped or pushed. A very tasteful remaster, sounding better than the original CD. If only all the Warp remasters could be this good…
Manuel Göttsching - E2–E4
posted a comment on Manuel Göttsching - E2–E4. about 1 year ago
Very disappointing mastering on this one. Sounds flat and lifeless (for sure cut from CD). The reverb is rendered as a coarse background noise. Not much in the way of stereo. High-hats are too loud.
Miles Davis - In A Silent Way

Worth every penny, this affordable pressing is sounding crisp and very dynamic. Can you get better sounding pressings? Yes, but at a much higher price. Downsides are a harsh hi-hat and cymbal and not much reverb.

Stellar sound on this affordable pressing. Spacious, dynamic, and lively sound.
Ray Charles - Genius + Soul = Jazz
posted a comment on Ray Charles - Genius + Soul = Jazz. about 1 year ago
Nasty clipping on Ray’s organ – but it is on the master tape! Otherwise enjoyable, but more of a dual-mono recording than stereo proper.
Agnes Obel - Philharmonics
posted a comment on Agnes Obel - Philharmonics. about 1 year ago
Lots of crackle, pops and other noises on the beginning of side A. Vinyl production quality control has really gone to shit. For the pressing plants there is no incentive to make a better product as long as they have order books filled years in advance.
Philip Glass - Dance Nos. 1-5
posted a comment on Philip Glass - Dance Nos. 1-5. about 1 year ago
Sounds okay, probably cut from digital. Packaging is above standard, but comes in a PVC(?) outer plastic sleeve. Will this sleeve off-gas and over time give my records a milky surface? I’m not taking chances and have relegated it to the bin.
Stereolab - Margerine Eclipse

Now on my third pressing of this one, and on all of them the C1 track has dropouts and noise in the left channel. A fault in the metal work no doubt.
Roy Ayers Ubiquity - Everybody Loves The Sunshine

Surprisingly large soundscape on this pressing. Worth every penny since it’s kinda audiophile without the price tag.
Sonny Rollins - Way Out West

Weird stereo-mix, but crisp, detailed, spacious and clean record. Recommended.
Spiritualized®* - Lazer Guided Melodies

Good pressing. Clean vinyl – no crackle or pops. Lot of bass. Tendency to harsh sibilants. Sounds a bit over-compressed.
Eno* - Another Green World
posted a comment on Eno* - Another Green World. about 1 year ago
Almost unbelievably good sound on this release. Finally a touchpoint where we can say with some certainty that Abbey Rd’s half-speed mastering is no better than real-time, and that the significant difference is between one 33 against two 45s.
Broadcast - Tender Buttons
posted a comment on Broadcast - Tender Buttons. about 1 year ago
The mastering/cutting really is shit on this one. The sound is completely flat and lifeless. The original CD version is much better in comparison. Warp should be ashamed of themselves.

Great dynamics, but on most tracks the horn tutti is very distorted. The cymbals are also consistently distorted. The stereo image is very artificial.

Sounds crisp and full with its solid bass. Plenty of treble too, sounds ‘hot’. Excellent remaster, but the pressing unfortunately has several defects in the last track on side A.

Audio has been compressed to death – zero dynamic range. Stupid loudness war victim.

I have now had two copies, and both have the same strong distortion on the piano chords of ‘Lonely Woman’. From reading the other comments it sounds like this is a dud lacquer, father, mother, or stamper.

George Duke - Faces In Reflection

This mastering and cutting is on the warmer side, and with a quite narrow stereo field. Probably very close to the master tape, but the high-res digital mastering offered more clarity and expansiveness. Never the less a good quality pressing at the... See full review

Got the EU version, and it sounds great - in fact better than my CD version. The sound is dynamic and with soundstage and transparency, and the treble doesn’t fry your ears.

Lee Morgan - The Sidewinder

The pressing is quiet despite the fact that my copy was covered in micro-scratches and with visible dusty fingerprints along the edge. The sound quality is rather ‘dead’ compared to the high-res digital I have from HDTracks. Blue Note vinyls need to... See full review

Not much in the way of bass on particular pressing. Somewhat trident and harsh mid-tone, but that is to be expected in this recording.

Stephen Mallinder - Pow-Wow

Typical dull, closed in, and overly compressed sound that is symptomatic of everything pressed at GZ. This one sounds like it’s mastered from MP3s. The original LP on the other hand sounds like it was mastered through a tin can: Thin and brittle... See full review

A masterpiece again. Different, yet closely related to the ‘Loveless’ sound. But this one is more direct, visceral, less fuzzy about perfection, deeper, and perhaps more emotionally engaging than Loveless. It grows on each listen, and as you embalm... See full review

Without a doubt their best effort. Actually it's really, really good. They should re-release the best tracks on a CD.
