Is the stereo side actually a stereo mix? I've seen speculation, but no actual confirmation, that it's either straight up mono or fake stereo.

Although the label states that the b-side is from the forthcoming "Pages of Life" album, "Fooled Again" did not make it to the final tracklist and remains exclusive to this single.

For years it has been a mystery as to who played pedal steel guitar on this album (namely on The True One). According to Lee Sklar it was Ben Keith. He discussed the personnel in this video:

Grey/Afro clocks in at 9:36, with fade-out beginning around 9:20. That 11:37 running time bugged me for years since I first saw it on a promo copy timing strip and never found any version that matched that.

The parent album was hyped by unscrupulous dealers as a lost psych classic for years. Which was a load of it.

This album was recorded for Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's Cranberry label but MCA shifted it to Impulse when that label was shuttered.

In addition to being drastically shortened, "Candy's Going Bad" has its chorus censored here. The second line "...got a pimp named Ted" has been replaced with a repeat of the first line "...got a room to let"

Release blocked for sale due to track #6 because, purportedly, "Ace reissued the recording unauthorized in the USA." This same song as recorded by Ernie K. Doe also resulted in his self-titled "Ernie K. Doe" album getting banned from sale on Discogs.

This CD single gives a catalog number for a US release of the "Life Goes On" album, but that release was cancelled. That album ended up being released only in Europe.

A shame this compilation has never been reissued on CD. Contains about everything I would ever want or need from this band.

No way this is a US release with that catalog number. The lack of further sleeve or label scans gives no doubt to the authenticity of this listing, which is that it is bunk.

Track #26 actually plays "Criminal Waltz" by Amede Breaux. This mistake was referenced in the liner notes of Cajun Honky Tonk: The Khoury Recordings, which does include the recording of "Crying Pine Grove Blues" which was supposed to have been included here.

The Swallow CDs present half of the first album in near-mono, two tracks in true stereo and the remaining four in mono. The Ace CDs on the other hand have everything in true stereo with the exception of those four mono tracks.

This is an upgrade of the 1990 Ace release. That particular disc outshone the one issued in the States by Swallow and this one is even better with its four bonus tracks.

This disc sounds great if you can find a playable copy*... Duncan Cowell did an awesome job on the transfers. Unlike the Swallow CD releases, all but four tracks in the first album are in true stereo.

This particular release of The Stranger is digitally identical to the very first CD releases, the 35DP 2 and CK34987 discs. These
De Agostini CDs can be had cheap, so this is a good choice if you were seeking the aforementioned discs out for their sonics. See full review |
