Essen - King Size Blues

"King size blues" perfectly captures a melancholic mood, reminding me of early Cup of Tea Records releases. A competent blend of male vocals, well-crafted beats and middle eastern rhythms.

Recommended, 8/10.

Luckily, I own Mess and Luck Be :).
It is hard to cover their career in two LPs but hoping for new material and a reissue of Black Market Gardening in the near future.

How do you summarise 32 years of one of the most prolific acts in the downtempo electronic music scene? The second “Retrospective Redux 90 → 22”, this time on vinyl, makes a decent attempt. One track from the debut album, “Old Codes New Chaos”, two... See full review

How come there has never been a vinyl pressing of this? It is a solid example of the genre.

Solid and welcome return to form, would have loved if this was pressed together with "From The DATs", highlighting the evolution over the years.

I don't know what is needed more, a second album or a reissue.
Natural Lateral - Tapestry Of Life

Very good! Plenty to go around, jazzy, funky, with latin undertones and a hint of melancholy throughout. Old school meets new school.
Agar Agar - The Dog And The Future

Hard to pigeonhole, but between the pop sensibilities, the electronic landscapes, the catchy rythms and the memorable voice, this is excellent.
Love the melancholy that comes through beneath the surface.

Favourite track: Lunatic fight jungle

If someone that somehow managed to be oblivious of Pork Recordings, throughout the 90s and up till now, then you could get this and forever be hooked.

You have been warned!

If this would be pressed on vinyl, I'd get it on day 1.

Repeat performance from the fantastic four, another set of 4 great tracks. Perhaps not as instantly impressive as the first one but Zero Theory delivers again!
Various - The Fantastic Four EP

Catskills Records at the height of their powers, a tour de force from four of their best acts. It's worth picking up this for the Zero Theory track alone but solid all around.

Well, I still remember when I picked up this CD back in the 90s. Nothing has changed, talent still shows. Full of innovative and varied downtempo tracks but the overall mood is what makes this special.
Various - This Ain't Trip Hop? - Part One

Yes, they used "trip hop" in the title, this means absolutely nothing.
It is a pretty damn good compilation of downtempo (and some more uptempo) electronic music which includes Trip Hop, in itself one of the most diverse genres.

Selection is more... See full review

Never have 4 tracks had more impact on my musical taste than this stunning ep.
Way ahead of its time!
Crustation With Bronagh Slevin - Bloom

Lucky to have a vinyl pressing of this excellent trip hop album. While Crustation didn't have the prolific career that others enjoyed, Bloom is freaking amazing.

Hey, Purple, Close My Eyes, Face The Waves and Down Down are top notch tracks.

Flawless transitions, excellent track selection (known & unknown), this has been so much better than what I was expecting when I bought it.
Fila Brazillia - Mess

Soft Music Under Stars, Laying Down The Law on the Lard, Blood, that's 20+ minutes of Fila goodness. Maybe not as cohesive as some of their other albums but still a must listen.

Fila Brazillia's second best album, original, diverse and ahead of its time. Still a great listen and brings happy memories.

Funky, fresh and full of surprises, a new direction for Fila Brazillia but a great album nonetheless.
