Two things, please:

1. I understand that some people don't care if they're selling the 1st press or the 2nd press, if it's from the UK or the US, if it's been remastered, or if it's NM or VG+, and so will just list it as whatever, but please don't do that. This site is structured for people who care about those things. If you don't want to be bothered with those details, and prefer to be a more casual seller, no problem, but eBay is probably a better site for you.

2. PLEASE LEARN HOW TO GRADE. It seems WAY TOO MANY people either don't know what they're doing or don't take grading seriously but still use high grades, like M or NM. Sometimes I think people are just careless, barely looking at what they're putting up for sale. And then there are probably some people who are intentionally misrepresenting what they're selling. This is a waste of everyone's time and money.

Grading is an agreed-upon system of evaluation, not something where you make up your own rules based on your ideas about what these terms mean and what level of damage is acceptable. It is NOT a game of averages. Something is only as good as its worst flaw.. If a record/disc or its packaging has ANY signs of wear they do not warrant a "near mint" grade because you personally think it's in "really nice shape" or "looks good for its age". Your satisfaction or the age of the item doesn't have anything to do with grading, only its actual objective condition.

Accurate grading is absolutely essential when you're selling things to people who can't look at them and asses the things for themselves. If you're asking people to put their complete trust in you and send you their money for these things you're selling, it's a pretty good idea to CLEARLY tell them what they'll be getting for that money. If they agree to pay you under the assumption of a stated condition and it does not arrive in that condition, you're going to make some people frustrated and angry. They may feel taken advantage of and ripped off. They may feel uncomfortable contacting you to ask why it's not in the stated condition. No one wants to deal with the unknown variable of how sellers sometimes behave when confronted with problems. (I was gaslit and threatened by one user here. Just for saying something wasn’t as described and asking for a return.) No one wants to deal with avoidable hassles. Hassles that cost people money and time -- and possibly a seller's reputation.

A quick summary of Goldmine's grades (which is what Discogs uses) in my own words:

MINT must meet two conditions: 1. UNUSED, and 2. NO damage whatsoever. The idea with the term is as if it's "fresh from the MINT". For the love of music, please stop saying things you have "played once" are Mint or that "it's closer to Mint because it only has one crease and looks new otherwise". THIS IS NOT MINT. As soon as something is used or has any damage, it can no longer be considered Mint. If you can't absolutely guarantee the item has never been played, do not use this grade; you'll be starting with NM.

NEAR MINT is better thought of as LIKE NEW. Contrary to popular belief, it does not mean it has light wear. NM means it looks like it was just taken out of its plastic wrap. This means it will not have any scuffs, scratches, ringwear, creases, sticker residue, discoloration, or other defects. Those are things that are considered damage. Near Mint is the best possible grade a used item could be, but as soon as there is ANY damage, it is no longer NM. Move on to the next grade. (This might be the most abused grade.)

VERY GOOD PLUS is better thought of as EXCELLENT. This is something GENTLY used and in REALLY SHARP condition, NOT beat up! You should look at it and see only very light signs of use, not: ringwear, creases, sticker residue, tears, scuffs, AND smells like bollocks. One or maybe two of those things, but not all of them and whichever it is, it's only a mild case, such a light ringwear (i.e. only see a portion of the outline of the record), a single small, clean split, or a minor corner bump. The flaws are more cosmetic than something affecting sound. Records will still be glossy and not have more than a few LIGHT scuffs (same with discs); if they do, they're NOT VG+. The only thing you should hear on playback for a VG+ record is barely audible crackle. If it's more than barely audible, it is not VG+. Move on to the next grade. (If NM isn't the most abused grade, then this is.)

VERY GOOD is probably accurately thought of as VERY GOOD at the higher end and GOOD at the lower end. VG is loved but not abused. More of the above condition issues, like ringwear where you can see the entire outline of the record, sticker residue, some initials or a name, a couple of split seams, but these aren't to the point where it sounds or looks like crap. Records still have some some gloss. Maybe you start hearing some light crackle at the intro and outro of songs, but it's not loud enough to be heard during the song. This is typically not collector level, but it is considered acceptable by your average listener. VG still a decent record or disc. No shame in having a VG copy. Many of us have them and cherish them.

GOOD PLUS is better thought of as OK. Well loved. Quite a lot of use. The above condition issues but more of them or more serious cases (e.g. large split seams, several soft creases or a hard one; writing and sticker residue; a moderate tear or two). A record will have lost most or all of its gloss and have several scuffs and some scratches. It will have the kind of crackle which is noticed during the song -- but not to the point where it overpowers the music. Maybe some pops. NO skips. People still appreciate G records and discs, especially if they have nostalgic attachment to the release, or just would love it in their collection until they find a better copy, so don't feel like no one will buy your G item.

GOOD is ironically not really good at all and is better thought of as FAIR. Heavy use. More than one large split seam or a full split, that "snowy" look that record jackets get, heavy creasing, large tears, stains. Records are dull looking, scuffed, and scratched. Beat up but still playable. Mostly fillers for collectors. This is the grade where crackle and pops are distracting and overpower the song. Still NO skips.

POOR is POOR, BAD. Anything in shitty, abused condition. Cracked/broken. In shambles. This is the grade that something automatically becomes when it skips. That's right: it can look brand new but if it skips and won't play through, it's in poor condition. Might make good wall art. Or someone just wants a copy. To have.

If you've never checked out Discogs write up on grading, for all of our sake, please do ----> How To Grade Items <----

To hear someone talk about how to grade and show examples? ----> This is good <----

Want to hear grade by how they sound? Check this out ----> Goldmine Record Grading Audio Examples <----

This can help you figure out a grade by asking questions about condition ---> (not perfect, but it may be helpful) <----

When vacillating between two, I always downgrade by one step. Discuss reality of piece, not what you want it to be. Simple, right?

When selling please mention the following:
+ missing: sleeve, liner, labels, hype sticker (if you know it came with one).
+ promo or cutout
+ ANY writing on anything
+ club edition (look it up if you're not sure how to tell)
+ if it's dirty with dust, fingerprints, sticky residue, etc. (It's honestly a bit shitty to sell something you've graded "NM" and you send it off to the customer with who knows what on it. If you don't want to clean it, it should be mentioned.)
+ if it smells of perfume, cigarettes, mothballs, mold, piss, whatever. If you're not aware, mothballs are an insecticide and mold is an effing health hazard and can make people sick! I personally can't stand getting a record that smells like it's been in someone's musty basement for an eternity.
+ knowing it's not in its original jewel case. Some people prefer the original.

Thanks for coming to my TED talk.

Same here. The label on the tape is also different than the photo. It's a white label that says,

My copy doesn't have a barcode or any label on the tape. I'd say it was a dub but the black cat art is revealed, not missing. Also, the insert is semi-glossy and feels like a kind of plastic? Anyone have any ideas?

My copy is in a thin, spineless sleeve with no liner and no print. Matrix reads: SHEX 16 A-2U-1-1 (side A) and SHEX 16 B-2U-1-1. Everything else looks the same: cover, back, labels. Variant or different press?

Is it the "P" that indicates a Pitman pressing? Because I have an issue with a stamp on the inner ring of "P8" without the CMU. The matrix of 1A CK09460 is the same but then is 33 C2. Totally different issue or a variation?

The rubber sleeve this came in damages plastic. It left a film on the disc and altered the surface of the jewel cases that were adjacent to it to a milky white.
