Meatbodies - Flora Ocean Tiger Bloom

This album is a perfect ten. Easily a top five for 2024 across all genres. This band has really developed their sound over the course of a few LPs. They really know how to craft a pop song. It’s the sound of the mid 90s without all the trappings.... See full review

John Zorn - 444

This might be one of the strongest Zorn-affiliated releases in, dare I say, ever. Excellent jazz album, experiments and gets free, but never without virtuosity. This was a real surprise.
Pye Corner Audio - Black Mill Tapes (10th Anniversary Box)
posted a review of Pye Corner Audio - Black Mill Tapes (10th Anniversary Box). about 1 year ago
an absolute masterpiece from start to finish. So many imitators in this genre, never attaining the perfection of this series. There was a time when Carpenter-esque flourished in the 2010’s, entire labels dedicated to this sound. You need only begin... See full review
Carrier (11) - Lazy Mechanics

A real gem, this one. Covers a lot of ground, and every dark corner in between. One of the best releases from this label in a while, and easily a list topper for 2023.
Regulatorwatts* - The Aesthetics Of No-Drag
posted a review of Regulatorwatts* - The Aesthetics Of No-Drag. about 1 year ago
Hard to say if the remaster made much difference. I’ve played both and it’s hard to tell. I can’t speak for the black vinyl, but I have two copies of the yellow, and both are mildly warped and plagued with surface noise. All that said, glad to see... See full review

Agree, pressing ain’t great. Mine is plagued with surface noise. A CD probably the way to go with Deathprod anyway.
Various - L.S.D. Synthesis
posted a review of Various - L.S.D. Synthesis. about 1 year ago
Lower key than previous LSD comp’s but still worth the pick up. No perceivable audio quality issues. This is on the ambient side of their releases, and I like it very much. This continues to be a well curated label.
Current (3) - Yesterday's Tomorrow Is Not Today
posted a review of Current (3) - Yesterday's Tomorrow Is Not Today . over 2 years ago
“Emo” had become a dirty word by the mid nineties, having morphed into boring Midwest rock, and worse later, poser goth arena punk. But “emo” to me will always be this band. Current and their contemporaries were informed by the revolution summer of... See full review
Waswaas - Attribute

Reeeaally good stuff here. Sounds very similar to modular-based experimental electronic ambient that is popular now, but this is much more compelling, and there is virtuosity in the composition, which elevates it from "noodling". The music lends... See full review
Human Figures - Footsteps

In what has quickly become a very crowded market, i.e. the new, new wave of post-punk, goth, etc-- this is a standout. It's as if they resurrected Martin to produce this record! This release should bubble to the top of all the other projects... See full review
The House In The Woods - The Spectral Corridor

Haven’t heard synth based ambient drone this good in a long while. I might argue this should be in top 10 of 2021 across all genres. Leave it to the master of this sound to let you know there’s still life left in this genre.
Dub Surgeon - The Lost Future
posted a review of Dub Surgeon - The Lost Future . over 3 years ago
Surprised this release isn’t more scarce, as it’s top rate instrumental dub. Infuses noise elements and other ambient undercurrents ala Burial. Production is solid.
Various - Raw Culture's Pushers 04
posted a review of Various - Raw Culture's Pushers 04. over 3 years ago
This is great; in the vein of Light Sounds Dark comp’s, but more beat oriented.
Sculpture Club - Worth
posted a review of Sculpture Club - Worth. over 4 years ago
This is a standout in the very crowded ‘wave revival. Moody and catchy, which is often missing from a lot of the bands mining this sound. Great presentation from the label as well.
Various - Land Of Greed... World Of Need

Hands down the best compilation of this era. If anyone needs a document of the hardcore scene in 1994, look no further. All bands involved at the top of their game, represented by two labels representative of the sound. Such an inspired idea to... See full review

Their best output in quite some time. Moody and driving, with psych tendencies. Noisy but not noise.
Lincoln (3) - Union

“Emo” or “Screamo”; it all started here folks. The sound of the mid-90’s hardcore kicked off with this 7”. There is no debate. Absolutely essential, and packs the same punch as it did all those many years ago. RIYL if you like Threadbare, the San... See full review
Hatred Surge - Human Overdose

One of the best hardcore releases of the 2010’s, and seemingly overlooked. Fits well with the Iron Lung label aesthetic, and probably one of their best releases. Members also in Iron Age, another oddly overlooked band that was ahead of their time.
Crossed Wires (5) - Crossed Wires

Best all around release from this label. Quality pressing. A true hidden treasure, Lives beyond novelty and trendiness. Well worth a re-issue. If you’re a current fan of LSD or even some of WRWTFWW output, this is a must own.
Various - Ex Machina 1-3

An essential compilation of late 20th Century waver sounds. If you're a fan of LSD comp's, and output from labels Dais, Dark Entries etc, this is your calling. Surprisingly, there is a pop sensibility to the tracks, not too esoteric or experimental,... See full review

I predict a lot of people will sleep on this. Neo-industrial has sort of reached saturation, but give this one a try. RIYL output from Hospital Productions, L.I.E.S. or even a recent LSD comp.
Liars - Drum's Not Dead
posted a review of Liars - Drum's Not Dead. over 5 years ago
This is a record by a band in transistion. I applaud the risks and experimental approach. It’s a very melancholy listen, and that feeling peaks with The Other Side of Mt HeartAttack, which is oddly one of the saddest songs ever written, yet hopeful.
Liars - Liars

Liars peaked with this album. Some incredibly well written songs on here, including Houseclouds, which I challenge anyone to hear without moving. Essential.

L.A. Takedown - Our Feeling Of Natural High
posted a review of L.A. Takedown - Our Feeling Of Natural High. over 5 years ago
Projects that draw heavily from a previous era or style can sound inauthentic. Not the case here! Beautifully crafted early 80’s era instrumental, for lack of a better word: kraut. Easy listening for mandatory house arrests during pandemics.
uon - Untitled

Dub as hauntology. Shimmering ambient with suggestions of beats. Pulsing with a dub undercurrent.
Zann (2) - Strange Ways / Inside Jungle

Good weird, in that way The labels WRWTFWW and Music from Memory have been doing. New Age-y without going off the deep end. Worldly without the eye rolling. Great record for cheering you up for current or future coronavirus house arrests.
Planchettes - The Truth

It sounds like it came from the late ‘60’s. It sounds like it came from New Orleans. It sounds like it sounds better on AM radio. These all are good things. If heavy garage rock is your thing, pick this up. RIYL The deadly snakes, castle face... See full review
Keith Hudson - Jammys Dub Encounter

Great entry point into the world of instrumental dub. “Gateway dub” if you will. This has got that 70’s vibe, but with 80’s production (read: higher fidelity and better mixing).

If the Old Ones of Lovecraftian mythos were to emerge from their slumber, this would be the soundtrack to that reckoning. It might classify as black metal, but they don’t confine themselves to the narrow parameters of that genre. For starters, the... See full review
Ian Martin (5) - Neo Modernist

Back to back releases from Pinkman, this and and the Retrograde Youth EP, absolutely essential. Ian Martin really takes the industrial techno/electro approach into a dare-say groovy direction. Cinematic without being the overdone carpenter-esque sound.
Retrograde Youth - Mass Asphyxia

Excellent EP. Killer industrial jabs. Doesn’t feel trendy either. The varied pace is welcome too, as the “industrial techno” space is plagued with beat production that becomes monotonous and unimaginative.

Drawn in by the EMS Synthi inventor hook, this did not sound as I had planned. That’s not a bad thing. These sorts of projects can feel masturbatory, or more often the recording fails to capture what it would be to experience live. Due respect to... See full review
Wasted Shirt - Fungus II

Sounds like you think a project between these two would sound, albeit more lightning bolt leaning than a ty segall band. Yet, more experimental and dynamic than a lightning bolt record. it seems like this was a lot of fun to make such a ruckus.
Vacivus - Annihilism

Probably the stand out death metal album of 2019. Dynamic and experimental. Vocals shift in interesting ways, moving beyond Cookie Monster. Not a single wasted track. Excellent production.

Another winner. Pretty standard stuff we’ve come to expect from LSD. Song A2 is a bit tinnitus inducing, but my ears have become sensitive in my old age. Completely anonymous and minimal presentation.

Keresone 454 is right up with with Fugazi, Hoover and Regulator Watts for the DC post-hardcore sound at its peak. Situation at Hand is their best work, a solid 10/10 album.

As a dub fan, and of the opinion that Mezzanine is a 10/10, I came into this with great expectations. I tend to shy away from remix projects, and dub for me can be a very fine line, i.e. 70's era focused. So with all of that, I'm here to say that... See full review

Magic Pockets (2) - Volcano Of The Bleeding Skies

This exists in crowded space as an also-ran to giants pye corner audio, etc, but give this a chance— it’s quite good. All the usual Carpenter-esque sounds, but it’s so well crafted that it will sit well among the genre.
