Dennis Brown - Man Next Door

"Man Next Door" was memorably covered by Massive Attack on the Mezzanine LP in 1998. Brown's version is excellent with an amazing dub on the flip..

I found this one 15 years ago and thought it would've caught on by now. Unidisc actually released a few really great records in the mid-70s, "Metamorphoses" by these same two creators being another example, but this album was their high water mark. I... See full review

They titled "Let it Be" after deciding in the tour van that the next song played on the radio would be their album title. I think "Let It Bleed" was equal parts Stones tribute and "Mats drunken sense of humor. Would've been a great title but I think... See full review
Helen Merrill - Lilac Wine

Lush, gorgeous arrangements if a little overdone at times. Merrill is still singing well at this point in her early 70s and delivers what will probably stand as her last truly great work. A very beautiful album..
Janis Ian - ...For All The Seasons Of Your Mind
posted a review of Janis Ian - ...For All The Seasons Of Your Mind. about 1 year ago
She'll always be overshadowed by her biggest song "At Seventeen" which is a shame because this is a great record that deserves more recognition. Strictly as a point of reference I think this is as good as any of Joni Mitchell's 60s LPs with Ian... See full review
The Strangeloves - Night Time

"Rhythm Of Love" was memorably (memorably for me at least) reimagined by The Pooh Sticks on their immortal LP "The Great White Wonder" in 1991.

I give Merrill huge props for going so far out of her comfort zone with this that I forgive its shortcomings. I also love just about everything she's ever released so I'm admittedly biased.

Sandy Denny - Early Home Recordings
posted a review of Sandy Denny - Early Home Recordings . about 1 year ago
I'm not sure if this has been brought up anywhere else on the web but this sounds like it was mastered at the wrong speed, most notably on Side 1. Of course Denny's voice changed and deepened over the years and the earliest songs here were probably... See full review

posted a review of Sandy Denny - I've Always Kept A Unicorn: The Acoustic Sandy Denny. about 1 year ago
Taken as a whole and accepted as a straight career retrospective this is one of the greatest compilations I've ever heard. Maybe the UK's greatest singer ever regardless of genre, hearing her stripped down with minimal accompaniment is preferable to... See full review
Eddie
posted a review of Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis With Shirley Scott - Moodsville Volume 4. about 1 year ago
For years I ignored this record thinking it was another Lockjaw and Scott organistic yawner but the joke's on me - Scott plays piano on this one and plays beautifully. I admit to being biased, I love the Moodsville line and will make apologies for it... See full review

Unfairly overlooked gem but the good news is clean copies can be found for peanuts. I'm not sure why other lesser records from this era are better known and/or more highly regarded but whatever the reason might be doesn't take away from the... See full review

This is a gorgeous record with Oliver Nelson at the height of his powers contributing arrangements to all but two tracks. Carter's voice and phrasing don't always work for me but here her stretched out delivery finds a home nestled between Nelson's... See full review

Godz, who had ballz enough for five bands, tread those otherworldly realms other so called "psychedelic" bands could only read about. Maybe the greatest NYC band of the 60s recording for the greatest label (ESP-Disk) in the history of independent... See full review

Wow, where did this come from? I can't speak to the rest of the LP but the b-side here-"My Grip Is Like A Cobra", the album's title track-has one of the dopest beats of the era and some rock solid rhymes from a legit female MC. Totally lost to the... See full review

Amazingly enough these are the tracks/versions that didn't make the first Africa Brass LP. How Impulse Records sat on a track as incredible as "Song Of The Underground Railroad" for some ten years is inexplicable, it's one of Coltrane's five best... See full review

Helen Merrill goes avant garde!! This might sound like a sacrilege but it actually works brilliantly as her voice drifts and soars above the cacophony with a natural ease only she could manage. I can't imagine any of Merrill's contemporaries of the... See full review

I believe this is a re-release of a record Merrill made with Dick Katz in 1967 called "The Feeling Is Mutual." The players are all the same and the track listing is identical with the exception of "You're My Thrill" which switches places on the A-side... See full review
