It should be noted that the band was never called Cherry Five. They were originally Oliver and then chose the name Goblin as a result of finding the first interesting word in the English dictionary (according to one member). Cinevox, for reasons I am ... See full review

The "true stereo" tracks (1-18) are made up of a needledrop from a vinyl source and were significantly noise reduced to compensate.

Not sure why the mono tracks had to be converted to "fake stereo" in this day and age, but they at least sound better ... See full review

The Modern Harmonic reissue is taken from a needledrop of an original LP complete with distortion rather than a tape source. A really disappointing and lazy trend.

Re: the Mighty Mouth "reissue", while it's nice to see this rare album reissued, not surprisingly it's a needledrop, complete with inner groove distortion on the last two tracks on each side. Whereas I've heard worse needledrops, there is also the ... See full review

I've compared them all (yes, really) and the original UK pressing on EMI is the clear winner with the French Barclay pressing being a close second. The original Cinevox LP was too bright for me. Newer reissues are just from CD masters and don't ... See full review

That impression is in your head because the Death Waltz was pressed from the same metal parts as AMS. That is to say, they are precisely the same grooves on the record.

I had a copy of this unofficial pressing but sold it. It seemed to be sourced from a very weak sounding needledrop - awful mastering!

Sounds to me to be a fold down of the stereo mix. If it isn't, it is very close to the stereo mix.

If anyone who owns the original copy on Delta could please update the listing with the matrix/deadwax info, this would be much appreciated!

The Rockadrome releases are from a bad needledrops rather than from tapes. Ugh, I really detest this trend.

I have not heard the original UK release but the German 2nd pressing is muddy as if from a very poorly done copy tape.

It would be helpful to know which title you picked up and whether it was new or used. Whereas the mastering on earlier MFSL titles may be questionable, I don't think many buyers would agree with you that they offer noisy pressings.

Could "RC" mean "Record Club"?

The A&M matrices should be SP4805 on Side A and SP4806 on Side B. Assuming it's not a mispress with both sides playing Side 2's songs, I'd guess you have a record club version.

This entry is erroneous. The picture is of a 7" 45rpm release, but the track listing is for the LP.

Thanks for your review. Note, however, that there are no current plans for similar box sets for the middle and later years, as the separate Immersion sets handled the bulk of that material.

Certain riffs can also be found on the CD "Thankyou and Goodnight" by National Flag, the band that Danny Edwardson and Seamus Sell were a part of in the middle 1970s.

"From the original master tapes" - I highly suspect this comes from a Warner Bros. copy tape based on the noticeable hiss throughout the entire program.

The Esoteric CD release is a needledrop from a worn LP with click/pop and noise reduction used to attempt to hide this fact. A great album that was not given its proper respect in this release.

Does this sound like a needledrop to anyone else? My copy looks mint, plays without noise, but has distortion throughout as if the stylus wasn't tracking properly. Strange, because quality of most releases in this series is stellar.

So far, I've not had it confirmed which members of Goblin performed on it, but the belief is that only a couple of members were involved in the sessions despite what Antonio Bido recalls.

Quite agreed. I bought it blind several years ago based on their use of a mellotron (and heck, the LP was only $2). I was quite surprised to find this to be an excellent rock album that I just wasn't aware of. Makes me curious about the first one.

B4 "Mary Anne with the Shaky Hand" is listed as the B-side to the US version of the "I Can See For Miles" single, but the version included is instead the stereo version taken directly from THE WHO SELL OUT (with the "Premier Drums" bit following).

The timings above are taken from the LP or CD and are incorrect. Several tracks are faded early (including "Death Dies") due to the restrictions of the format.

This CD suggests that it is digitally remastered from the master tapes, but it is clearly a needledrop from an LP, and not an especially good one. Beware.
