I run the Dutch demo-archive. It’s our aim to document and digitize all demotapes of the Lowlands. Because it’s heritage 💎
Most demotapes don't have a lot of information on them. Sometimes I interview bandmembers about the credits, so that a detailed genealogy of Dutch music and its physical releases is formed. I only submit items who were distributed in multiple numbers and are eligible according to Discogs standards offcourse; so no rehearsal tapes. Out of 10.000 cassettes in the archive I have now submitted about 1.500 on Discogs. Sometimes I stumble upon (foreign) advance tapes and promocassettes. I'll submit those too.
I also use the interviews to write articles about these (unknown) artists and their demos. You can read them on my website or Facebookpage. Sometimes I re-release a demotape. They always come with a hardcopy magazine.
Since 2023 I use a log on my music blog as external source to enable the verification of interviews and [uncredited] credits. If available I also refer to old newspapers, even though journalists in those days regularly misspelled the names of artists ;-). Other online sources don't really exist. After all, these cassettes are pre Internet and 20-40 years old. When in doubt (e.g. about the year) I don't use credits provided by the band.
Mail me if you have physical tapes for sale or trade! I sometimes sell doubles to pay for my expenses as archivist. I own all the cassettes I submit, but also have them in my wantlist to keep up with the market.
