Tracks sync up with the old BGO two-fer (Alive! / Rare Junk), so either this is a volume-boosted clone from that disc or they share a common source. My money is on the former.

The worst of the lot of these Dirt Band SHM-CDs. I honestly thought something was wrong with my speakers when I put this one on. No treble, and it's distorted all to heck.
Nice artwork reproduction, so it has that going for it.

Stick with the BGO ... See full review

Tracks sync up with the earlier Japanese release (TOCP-3476). This is but a clone of that version, only brickwalled to the max.

I'm not sure what they used as a source for this disc, but it has that nice vintage cassette ambience. If you're into that sort of thing. Nice repro of the artwork, though.

Very well done set. The kind of thing I would've liked to have had ages ago before Elektra flooded the market with comp after comp.
Everything sounds great and true to the singles as far as I can establish.

The single mix (at least for the US 45) is noticeably different from the standard album version. Lot more reverb. I've never heard the quad version of the Sundown album, but I'm wondering if this isn't simply a stereo fold of that?

Interesting thing about this disc - "Polly Vaughn" and "Banjo In the Hollow" have cold endings. On every other release, both LP and CD, they fade out. They've never appeared anywhere else in this unedited form, which would make this a must for those ... See full review

A sealed, still-in-the-longbox copy of this one popped up on eBay recently. Interestingly enough, the longbox reproduces the actual cover artwork.

Ran across an early Elektra LP called Folk Banjo Styles and couldn't help but notice the striking resemblance its cover had to the printing on the disc face of this release of The Banjo Album.

This set does not include new remasters -- these discs are sonically identical to the US Warner Bros CDs that came out between '87 - '89.
Each disc is packaged in a sleeve with the album cover on the front and a cropped version of the standard CD's tray ... See full review

The first release (numerically speaking) for PIR is an absolute anomaly. Instead of the R&B/soul you'd expect from this label, this is a little closer to rural rock. I'm not sure if Gideon Smith is the name of an individual or a band -- the copyright ... See full review

Per Schwann, this album wasn't issued on CD until July '87 in the States. The only US pressing shown here likely doesn't date back that far, but I've never seen anything besides SRC 'barcode matrix' pressings for this one.

According to a full-page ad that appeared in (at least) Record World, this single was drawn from an upcoming White Whale album simply titled "The Dillards". In another issue of Record World, it is said that this album was slated for a mid-June 1970 ... See full review

I've been unable to find any evidence of a Japanese release of this title, let alone one with the US catalog number. Is this in fact a Japanese release? A pirate?

The two US versions of MCAD-5347 (full artwork and generic) are digitally identical, while the Canadian version (MCABD-5347) is a clone of the US but with a .2dB drop in volume.

There seems to be at least two different flavors of this one. I had a copy I bought (and promptly lost) about 20 years ago that had the text on the spine (and, if IIRC, on the back as well) in red. I bought another copy recently and the text is ... See full review

Early 8-track and cassette releases of this album have the song "Too Much To Lose" in place of "You Are What I Am". This was obviously a mistake as the packaging lists the latter song, so one would have to actually play the tape to know which of these ... See full review

If you're a fan of Doug and/or Rusty Kershaw, I can't see how you'd not want this. The sound quality is fairly decent considering that the bulk of these recordings are home recordings or were recorded in some small studio on the cheap.

No release of MCAD-31158 will be earlier than 1987.

There is an earlier Japan-for-US MCA CD release that is not listed here - MCAD-5501. The mastering code of DIDX-390 would put it at 1985.
