Les McCann - Invitation To Openness
posted a review of Les McCann - Invitation To Openness. 2 months ago
A great and under- the- radar nugget. Les, his band, Yusef Lateef and the cream of the Atlantic NYC studio crew sounding like a soul jazz version of In A Silent Way/Bitches Brew. You can't go wrong with early 70s Atlantic for artists, production and... See full review
Goon (7) - Hour Of Green Evening

Found this through Discogs' interview with Colin Newman and Malka Spiegel. Can't say enough to recommend Goon. Low- tuned with high harmonies; hits same way as Starflyer 59, Stellaluna, Swervedriver and Airiel. Mixes conflicting elements naturally:... See full review
Leon Russell - Leon Live
posted a review of Leon Russell - Leon Live. about 1 year ago
Great, relentless live performance of Leon and band at the height of their power and popularity. It really is like a tent revival wrapped up in a rock show. The one drawback is the rather harsh sound quality that's all midrange and treble. Where is... See full review
Leon Russell, Marc Benno - Asylum Choir II
posted a review of Leon Russell, Marc Benno - Asylum Choir II. about 1 year ago
If you love Leon Russell, you should check ACII out. It's got the classic Leon piano-driven gumbo with (moderate) psych and heavy-rock additives. Worth it, especially since you can still score an LP at a price that allows regret-free experimenting.

19 tunes over 2 LPs can be a lot of JD to digest at once. Fortunately it's singles and B-sides s whanning (sorry, cat on keyboard there) their whole career, from Warsaw on. Great edition, too. Solid vinyl that's well mastered.
Killing Joke - Killing Joke
posted a review of Killing Joke - Killing Joke. about 1 year ago
Found this version recently and held off getting it cause I figured it was a boot. Vinyl and sleeve too pristine for a 43 year old LP. It has all the correct identifiers, including the Jem distro info. However, hand etched "Editions EG - Malicious... See full review

This is Rick's earlier 'Mission Magic' album minus a bunch of tracks. The songs came from his Saturday morning (cartoon? Live action?) Show. Did it even play in the US? Anyway, this is pre- General Hospital, pre- Jesse's Girl. Tunes fall into 70s... See full review

20/20 - 20/20
posted a review of 20/20 - 20/20. about 1 year ago
A classic power pop album with New Wave polish. Yellow Pills is the stand out, and for good reason. It captures the sound of young folks joyously rubberlegging towards self-destruction. It wraps Cheap Trick's "Heaven Tonight" in a pair of tight pants... See full review
Larry Williams & Johnny Watson - Nobody / Find Yourself Someone To Love
posted a review of Larry Williams & Johnny Watson - Nobody / Find Yourself Someone To Love. about 1 year ago
Williams and Watson team up with the mind- and genre-bending virtuosos in Kaleidoscope for a soul raga singularity. 2 sitars in counterpoint, tabla-style drums, 2 part R&B harmonizing and a misterioso organ ending that comes out of nowhere. Seriously,... See full review

More classic era TR. You get advanced (for 1974) studio trickery, proto-synth pop, full band excursions that sound like Mahogany Rush, full band excursions that lampoon metal, Todd Ballads that continue to owe a huge debt to Laura Nyro and Smokey... See full review
McCartney* - McCartney

This is a great edition of this album. Paul's informal 4 track tunes thrown together into a quickie classic. McCartney II would follow in the same fashion in 1979 but with late-70s tech and influences.
Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers - You're Gonna Get It!

The best all around. I like this better than 'Torpedoes'. It just hangs together better to my ears with 5 of the best ever TP & HB songs - 'When The Time Comes', 'You're Gonna Get It', 'Too Much Ain't Enough', 'I Need To Know' and 'Listen To Her... See full review

This is an insane comp in so many ways. 20 classic tracks and its still only like 43 minutes long. Nowhere on it does it say MONO, which probably would've deterred 70's buying public from picking it up ('Linda, where is the STEREO version?!'). Also,... See full review

I've seen this album out in the wild 3 times in the past 17 years. The third time, I bought it.

55 years later, the Stills side holds up better. You get a pre-req Dylan cover, the breakbeat and wah-wah guitar of 'Season Of The Witch', the phased garage rock version of 'You Don't Love Me' that was clipped by the Allman Bros. a few years later,... See full review

I had seen the video for 'New Frontier' when it came out. The song still got radio play. But hearing the title track on late-night NYC radio in 1990 made me go out and buy the CD (where is it now?). I was a weird kid, up late listening to the radio,... See full review

For ages, I had the first 30 seconds or so of 'Real Man' on a tape that I recorded off of late-night NYC radio in the early 90s (WNEW or K-Rock). It gets to the middle of the first verse before it abruptly cuts off - too pretentious and wimpy for my... See full review

It's gold like Budweiser is gold (after you drink it).

This comp is interesting, but hardly as essential as BD's 3 -4 albums, which are hard hitting and sexy. This plays like a bunch of demos (which I think it is) in which Betty is feeling her way... See full review

It sounds great. Omnivore did a fantastic job here. My copy is flat, clean and quiet. However, the correct sequence to me will always be that of the 90s Ryko reissue that starts with 'Kizza Me' and ends with 'Whole Lotta Shakin'.

100% genre-breaking genius. 100% guitar playing maniac. Country music couldn't contain Jerry Reed. He cut it with swamp-funk, near-rock and his own wild sense of humor. Elvis Presley covered 2 tunes here. As Jerry said, "son, I was topping'... See full review

This is classic Merle era. It has at least 3 Country Pantheon Level cuts in 'Working Man Blues', 'Silver Wings' and 'Hungry Eyes'. But it doesn't do it for me. Too many songs here are downtempo weepers. As one of like 5 LPs Merle put out in 1969,... See full review
