Sonny Rollins - Love At First Sight
posted a review of Sonny Rollins - Love At First Sight. over 2 years ago
I was going to argue that the low rating is unfair, but then realized that I'd probably also give it 3 stars. There's 2-3 really solid tracks and they clouded my judgement lol. The rest is very substandard.

Gene Ammons - Got My Own

This album is pretty much half awesome. For me, the tracks with string arrangements are just not appealing. Most the others stay pretty funky. "God bless the child" as a prime example.

I felt pretty agnostic about this one until the last track when dejohnette busted out the rock drums. Peacock slays that track as well.

There were plenty of sensational artists that made cutting edge stuff around 2005. Some of it probably isn't your cup of tea but that doesn't make it less valuable, hip hop and nu metal included. A 2005 version could have animal collective, converge,... See full review

180g makes no difference to sound quality anyways. Not on black, colored, or picture disc, so this really is just as pointless as any other 180g pressing.
Lee Ritenour - Earth Run

[quote=SourceCodeX] I bought this release decades simply because Rit was holding a SynthAxe that Allan Holdsworth mastered plus he had done well alongside Tommy Bolin playing on A. Mouzon's Mind Transplant unique fusion offering -- but -- this Earth... See full review

Stanley Clarke - Modern Man

Don't sleep on this one. Not sure how it's got such a low overall rating on here. Original U.S. Nemperor pressings sound super dynamic and bassy as well. Great value

REENO
I'm not sure if his heavy handed reviews are that accurate though...

What is an "accurate" review tho? They're talking about what they heard and think of it, not what you do. It's music so it's never gonna be "accurate"

[quote=MEllODrOnE] I’ve gone wrong with ECM plenty of times. First, they don’t use the best pressing plant and while SST is ok, they’re not always the best at remastering LPs. But then again...Some has 20K cost of systems and may not like the details,... See full review
CTI Records
posted a review of CTI Records. over 4 years ago
If a friend came to me saying they wanted to get into jazz but didn't know where to start, I'd point them to CTI. It's such a great way to ease someone into jazz-related music without it being too foreign-sounding from what they're used to. This... See full review

My goodness the lineup on this album... How can you not buy it just from reading the feature list on the cover? What I love about Freddie and his 70's (especially CTI) work is the way he let the fantastic cast around him shine. Yes it's a Freddie... See full review

Dream Theater - A Change Of Seasons

They really should release this as a single sided 12" with just the title track. Maybe do an etching on the blank side to draw in those who like gimmicks. Price it at $20-25 usd, done.
Freddie Hubbard - First Light
posted a comment on Freddie Hubbard - First Light. over 4 years ago
I forgot how sick this album is. Especially side 1. George Benson sounds great, esp his rhythm work. Might go out the next few days and buy the remaining 4 or 5 hubbard cti records, they're always cheap around here.
Max Roach And His Orchestra & Chorus* - It's Time
posted a comment on Max Roach And His Orchestra & Chorus* - It's Time. over 4 years ago
It's going to be a digital transfer to vinyl so I'd expect very minimal surface noise, basically silent. Probably a lack of warmth and less dynamic range, but I'd assume it's listenable. I might have to grab one just to test it.
Herbie Mann - Herbie Mann
posted a comment on Herbie Mann - Herbie Mann. over 4 years ago
Sounds a ton like early 70s traffic to me. Barleycorn or Low spark era. And that's not a bad thing at all. Also yes I know this album came out before those..
Leatherface - Mush
posted a comment on Leatherface - Mush. over 4 years ago
It's been happening a lot lately. As far as I know it's an issue with distribution sending an inconsistent and insufficient # of units. Not sending as many as the store has ordered. Same happened to me with a Testament reissue last month
Stanley Clarke - Stanley Clarke
posted a review of Stanley Clarke - Stanley Clarke. over 4 years ago
This album is an unassuming BEAST. Looking at the album cover you'd think it's pretty standard and maybe just funky fusion, but no no no. This is some HEAVY HEAVY fusion from the mid 70s. I'd say just as rock-influenced as funk and jazz.
Throughout... See full review

I have a Winchester and Los Angeles USA pressing and they're both massively off-center. Extremely visible but sadly also audible, particularly in piano segments and near the center of the record. Maybe find a different version if bothered by this.

It's a pretty muddy-sounding album as is. At least the yellow label epic u.s. copies I've had.
Crimson Glory - Crimson Glory
posted a comment on Crimson Glory - Crimson Glory. over 4 years ago
I really don't think they're all that similar. They can both sing high, yes, but it's 80s metal so that's not uncommon. I don't think you have enough material to compare the 2 if you've only heard one song of crimson glory

I agree. Would love to have the original mix spread on 2 LP. Idk how anyone likes the remix version of this album. I will say tho that for a 50+ minute LP, my early U.S. charisma copy sounds damn good. Much better than other long single disc albums... See full review

I don't really think this is as bad or bland as some would make you believe. It's definitely got some slow and dull moments. But I see myself returning for "Pygmy Funk" if nothing else. When played loudly, much of this album isn't "background" music,... See full review

Are early pressings of Traffic albums expensive where you are? I'm just curious. I'm in the u.s. and you can find really nice copies of them at most record stores, for under $10. From what I've read they sold a bit better over here. Still weird to... See full review

Great review. Thoughtful, thorough, and concise. This record sounds a bit too polished and rounded for my tastes, but at the same time that's what I like about it. It's so well-recorded and engineered that this fact alone makes for an enjoyable listen.
