DMZ had maintained such a high standard up until number 10, almost every release did something fundamentally new and amazing. I wasn't quite so impressed with this one though.
posted a review of Mala (4) - Left Leg Out / Blue Notez. over 6 years ago
Very nice DMZ, both tunes here are quite unique. Blue Notez is the standout for me, it has a particularly moody and evocative atmosphere.

Ancient Memories is pretty good, although this release isn't quite up to the very high standard of the previous DMZs up to this point.

More really dark stuff from Loefah. First heard these on the Breezeblock dubstep showcase and couldn't wait to get my hands on them.
posted a review of Digital Mystikz - Haunted / Anti War Dub. over 6 years ago
This is a good one, Anti War Dub is a beautiful track. I remember playing this out my window in the summer the year it came out; it fits that vibe perfectly. Then you have Haunted which was (and remains) a ridiculously heavy tune. Shame its a ... See full review

Classic Loefah tunes that carve out his incredibly dark and unique sound. The 'Scanners' samples just work perfectly as we get scanned by the bass... "i must remind you the scanning experience is usually painful". Bass with dangerous intent.

Neverland is such a strong track which builds towards a fantastic climax. A defining classic of the genre.

One of the early dubstep tunes where the dub elements are most apparent. A very good one with a unique sound.
posted a review of Mala (4) / Loefah - Da Wrath (Souljahz Vip Mix) / Twisup (Vip). over 6 years ago
One of my favourite DMZ releases, this one is really dark - Da Wrath especially. Shows the early Digital Mystikz style a bit like the Big Apple release.
posted a review of Whisperhill - Open Your Eyes. over 6 years ago
Intriguing release this one, with an unusual style a bit like Caterva or Les Trolls. The B side tracks are the most interesting, using some subtle piano and vocal samples to create some emotive atmospheres that blend effectively with the ... See full review

Dark, dense, noisy and bizarre industrial music. Beautiful picture disc vinyl. A work of art from an excellent label.

Mine too, I think they all do.

This is a brilliant release, similar to entroducing stuff. Nice to have too, the cardboard packaging is beautiful.

Unrelenting, brutal breakcore. Strikes a nice balance between aggression and noise while keeping a groove together. These tunes really kick and the quality is consistent making this a very strong release. A sonic assault vehicle for the rave.

Strong collection of breakcore/glitch which sits very nicely together on this release. Technically intricate, but also with emotive melodies on 'stretch industry' and 'please don't remember', which flows beautifully into an a kind of breakcore ballad at ... See full review

Atmospheric, foggy, murky dubstep. Combines various eastern sounds, blues samples and a fair dose of crackle to capture a multicultural metropolis vibe that is (was) both current and futuristic at the same time. Sits nicely alongside Burial's more well ... See full review

'Lion Girl' is an awesome tune - really nice blend of emotive piano / synth lines with brutal gabber kicks + breaks. Also more than enough glitched out effects and twists to the sound to keep the breakcore crowds happy. Beautiful, heavy, danceable and ... See full review

Nice collection of jump up drum and bass. You get a lot of tunes for your money here, and the quality is consistently good. This is loaded with classics like 'Reach Out' and 'King of the Beats', but also other great tunes in the style which are ... See full review

'Clean Decibel' is the better tune on here. It has a nice slightly acid-sounding bassline.
posted a review of Aphrodite - Playground Shades / Siren Bass. over 6 years ago
Typical aphrodite stuff, 'playground shades' is quite a heavy tune when it gets going. 'Siren bass' is exactly that - you get a siren, then you get some bass. If you like his sound this won't disappoint.

Mostly quite slow smoochy remixes of the original tune, apart from milklikkaz garagey remix and a german rap tune on the end. Has it's moments but won't do much for you if you are looking for the more dancey deejay punk-roc stuff - this is all quite ... See full review

On this you get 'Champion Sound (remix)' which is what will sell it for most people. It's a reasonable update of a classic tune, although I prefer the original to be honest. The other stand-out was 'Embargo', which has a nice bassline and quite an old ... See full review

The original mix is well produced. It has some nice acid and hoover stabs. Good for the genre. The Chris C remix is impressive in that it does actually manage to be even more irritating than Alanis Morrisette, although plus points for the Bill & Ted ... See full review

'Scream' remixes primal scream's 'don't fight it feel it'. It puts some of those nice sounds into more of a techno tune. It's okay, nothing special. The other tune is pretty generic.
posted a review of 30Hz - Eating The Dead. over 6 years ago
These are quite nice rolling breaks tunes. They have quite an electro-bass sound which is reminiscent of older stuff but updated for the nu-skool breaks crowd.
posted a review of ED2000 Vs. 30Hz - Make Contact. over 6 years ago
Original mix is a breaks tune with an almost dark-garage type sound. The remix is heavier in more of a nu-skool breaks style, quite a tough one for the genre with a good bassline.
posted a review of Acid Ted - One Consciousness. over 6 years ago
Effective piece of acid techno here with a Bill Hicks sample. The Dynamic Intervention mix is the heavier one, working up to a disgusting 303 frenzy which will probably obliterate most people's consciousness. Acid techno doesn't get much better or ... See full review

The nasty habits remix is the choice cut here. Ace energy to the start-stop breaks that makes you want to chop it up even more with a fader when you mix it. I still don't think it tops the original but quite a nice one for 2001.

This tune is totally mental. The hoover sounds are so utterly over the top and stupid that it becomes almost a work of genius. The tinrib stuff was mostly pretty good but the slightly smoother/slick style doesn't work so well on a tune as unhinged as ... See full review

I may be missing something but this release never did it for me. The A mix has a bunch of tacky vocal samples thrown on, the AA is just a bit dull and generic. I much prefer the original mix and neither of these seem to keep the wicked acid/303 lines. ... See full review

Good example of the genre. This record ticks all the rude boxes, but the standouts are actually the movie theme remixes of Superfly and Ghetto Strikes Back. The tone may be low but the quality is high on this release.

A1 and B1 are quite nice unhinged free party techno with a loose and quite mental vibe. Rugdeela, is a rug anthem with a relentless and well produced, crisp d&b beat driving it forward. B1 has an uptempo 4/4 beat and sounds similarly tight. B2 is ... See full review

Two nice early dubstep tunes when the half-step style was just starting. Probably some of the darkest tunes Skream did, these both have really nice dense claustrophobic atmospheres. As on Midnight Request Line, the sounds on these are also quite grimey.

Maybe not Deejay Punk-Roc's finest hour, but probably one of the most fun and catchy records he put out. On this record you also get two suitably sweaty club mixes. Punk-Roc's own is a nice broken beat version, while the B-side gets a lo-fi disco feel.

As far as hard trance/hard house goes around 2000, this is about as good as it gets. On one side you get a solid hard-trance number, on the other a more acid-sounding tune with an unusual breaks bit in the middle that works a treat.
