SOVIET FRANCE - LOH LAND (Staalplaat STCD 018) CD 77m
Ever since their inception Soviet France have been one of the most radical and challenging of the industrial noise bands, yet they've managed (despite their radical stance) to create noise-art that is appealing, fascinating, often hypnotic and surreal. Of course, some Soviet France is virtually unlistenable, and other recordings are minor masterpieces, such is the art of experimental music. With LOH LAND, I'm pleased to announce that it is one of their finest yet, sonic art with great depth, variety and invention, without any nastiness. A step on from the atmospherics of SHOUTING AT THE MOON, featuring a good deal of vocal, treated and reversed sounds, occasionally very close to Nurse With Wound (cf. LUMBS SISTER, DRUNK...) - disturbing yes, but really fascinating too.
From my review in Audion #22, published in July 1992
