- This just got a repress, don't pay scalper prices. Just paid $40 Canadian from my local record store.

- Great choice for a Tone Poet release, a touch avant-garde but not too out there. Drums and cymbals sound really clear and crisp. Horns well balanced. A reasonable piano sound considering RVG recorded it. Some have commented the bass is underdone - it’s a little reserved but it’s still clear and easily discernible in the mix, just not as focused in sound as the other instruments.

Blue Note sessions led by Jackie McLean are enjoyable and adventurous, at times. This one moves along quite nicely, with just enough familiarity to hold the listener while exploring new territory. Little known (to me) Charles Tollliver brings everyone home with a more standard composition, “Truth” for the last track on the album. He also plays a nice trumpet throughout, and meshes well with Jackie. Rhythm section is tight and lively, plus Herbie Hancock has always been a favorite of mine. Honestly, none of the players disappoint. I’m sure they did other sessions/dates during this time period. Maybe that’s why “it’s time!” this record was recorded when it was! - As others have mentioned, bass is a little lost in the mix. More on some tracks than others. The rest of the instruments sparkle and sound incredible
Equipment used:
* Rega Planar 6 w/NEO PSU
* Rega Exact cartridge
* Rega Elex-R
* Dali Oberon 5
* Blue Jeans Cables + interconnects - Edited 3 years agotone poet overhype train and kevins gray overall work on these albums... this ear piercing album sounds good but not amazing for sure, you can barely hear cecil mcbee bass and he has few minor solos as well. as for the album itself the annoying long boogaloo themes make this attempt to avangarde outdated and don't really fit the content. its like trying to mix hard bop with something out, it just does not work. you will find interesting solos here but that boogaloo junk on most of the tunes makes it a bad matching overall. scares me away from repeated listenings. if I want to hear some ear catching hard bop I will listen to a proper one, which blue note has plenty anyway.
- Man the instruments fly off the album. The stereo separation is as distinct as I’ve ever heard. At one point I was startled by the horns and I’m not on a crazy expensive set up. Highly recommend
