Reviews
- Tribute albums tend to be pretty hit and miss, and the ones from Cleopatra/Deadline tend to be worse than most, what with their tendency to feature just about any unemployed hair metaller who walks by. Still, every once in a while they get one right. Case in point: Humanary Stew – their tribute to legendary shock rocker Alice Cooper.
This tribute album has a couple of things going for it. The first is that the talent assembled is actually quite impressive. We’re talking names like Ronnie James Dio (RIP), Joe Elliott and Phil Collen (Def Leppard), Dave Mustaine and Marty Friedman (Megadeth), Roger Daltrey (the Who), Slash, Bruce Dickinson and Adrian Smith (Iron Maiden), Dee Snider (Twisted Sister), Glenn Hughes (Deep Purple), Don Dokken and many more recognizable names, all produced by Bob Kulick. The second thing that helps is that these covers are all very faithful to the originals, but with just enough of a unique touch. “No More Mr. Nice Guy” ends up sounding like it was written just for Roger Daltrey, and Ronnie James Dio makes “Welcome to My Nightmare” sound like an old Black Sabbath number. The contributions from members of Motley Crue and LA Guns are less memorable, but for the most part these are some very well executed cover songs.
It’s not exactly a must-have release (then again, what tribute album is?), but Humanary Stew is one of the better tribute albums out there, and one that should please fans of the artists involved as well as most Alice Cooper fans. It’s well worth the few bucks to give a used copy a try.
