D*Note

Profile:

British experimental dance act.
D*Note's blend of Ambient, Nu-Jazz, Drum & Bass, House and rare groove springs from Matt Winn (Matt Wienevski) and musical friends consisting of keyboard player Matt Cooper who records with Outside, guitarist Keith Osbourne, and others. Vocalists have included Beth Hirsch, Pamela Anderson, Ceri Evans of Sunship, Dee Major and more. Other collaborators include scratching from Charlie Lexton as Cool Breeze, rappers Navigator and Krazy Cool D-Zine.

The debut album Babel had 4 singles, each of which enjoyed good reviews in their day. Criminal Justice built on the energy of the debut and included highlights such as the title track, Iniquity Worker and The Garden Of Earthly Delights with notable performance by vocalist Pamela Anderson. To avoid confusion with the celebrity Pamela Anderson Lee, Anderson now goes by P.Y. Anderson.

Anderson also contributed to their eponymous 1997 album D*Note moving distinctly towards a house sound with her vocals delivering passion and power in the anthem Waiting Hopefully. 4 Hero and Deep Dish provided top-notch remixes. Fuchsia Dog of 2002 continued in the house dance direction.

The sixth D*Note album is more thoughtful and deep. Laguna arrived in 2006 featuring Beth Hirsch; who is well known for her vocals on the first AIR album Moon Safari. Laguna features a version of Joni Mitchell's Edith and the Kingpin among others. It includes several covers described by Winn as "hidden gems, the sort of things that music lovers love finding.... an attempt to use the distinctive D*Note sound and marry it to strong American songs, connecting 70s folk rock with drum & bass."

Matt Winn has also made several short films. Coming Down is one of his soundtracks. He also directed January 2nd, the movie.
