Whitney Balliett

Jazz writer, born April 17, 1926 in New York.
Staff writer for the New Yorker (early 1950s), contributor to the Saturday Review (1953-1957), adviser for the TV program "The Sound Of Jazz", broadcast live by CBS in 1957. Author of, among others, The sound of surprise (1959), Such sweet thunder (1966), New York notes: a journal of jazz 1972-1975 (1976), and Jelly Roll, Jabbo and Fats (1983).
