Britain's oldest professional symphony orchestra, formed 1857 by Charles Hallé. In 1899 Hans Richter took over the orchestra and from 1911 to 1943 the orchestra enjoyed a succession of permanent and guest conductors including Beecham, Sargent and Harty. In 1943 John Barbirolli took over and transformed the Hallé from a provincial to an international force in the music world.
