Herman Asplöf

Swedish composer and cathedral organist in Gothenburg Cathedral from 1929 to 1955, born November 15, 1881 in Gustavsström in Gåsborn's parish, Värmland, died February 7, 1959 in Gothenburg.

He took the organist degree in Karlstad in 1898 and higher degrees (music director) at Royal music conservatory in Stockholm 1901. He received the State Composer Scholarship.
From 1902 to 1910 he was an organist in Malmö Sankt Petri church, then from 1910 in the newly built Annedal church in Gothenburg. He was organist there until 1929.

On January 11, 1929, the Gothenburg cathedral organist Elfrida Andrée, who held her post since 1867, passed away. Herman Asplöf was elected to the post in the autumn of 1929. He was granted pension from December 1, 1951, but remained as a temporary, appointed cathedral organist until 1955. At that time, a new holder of the service had been appointed, Gösta Lundborg.
Asplöf was also a music teacher at the Västra realläroverket (later Majornas läroverk) in Gothenburg. He wrote works for organ, choir and chamber music. Some of his works are on CD. He also co-authored a textbook for organ playing with Birger Anrep-Nordin and taught organ playing.
