Kenny G (2) – Breathless

I've seen more than one copy of this at every thrift store I've been to (high-selling album, so not exactly a negative), and Kenny G isn't generally respected by many music fans, but I think this is a decent enough album with some highlights. I really like his previous efforts a lot more such as G Force (1983) and Duotones (1986), and even some of the slower tracks on these albums too, but some of the ones here are just a bit too cheesy and sort of soporific for my taste.

But I still think that there are some solid moments here such as the bright The Joy of Life, the somber Alone and Sister Rose, and the funkier hip-house orientated G-Bop being my favorite. Also, the two vocal tracks By the Time This Night is Over and Even If My Heart Would Break are inoffensive pop tracks, but that's ok as I think they're pretty good, even though the latter is pure cheese.

So it's definitely not for everyone, plus I don't think it needs to be 71 minutes long as a whole, but there's some good tracks that I think are worth checking out if you're into this kind of smooth jazz sound.

Kenny G was big in the 90s when all the CD's were in the Alpha Security longboxes. I remember he used to be on Oprah. It's kind of weird how huge some of those strip mall sort of record stores were during the early 90s CD/cassette era and people paying $18-$20+ for a CD. Ridiculous. All those places ended up becoming tanning salons, churches, hardware stores, pet stores, jewelry stores, home goods stores, etc.
