Track 2 is the version I remember hearing most on the radio back in 1988. I was frustrated because I bought the 7" and 12" singles at the time and neither had this mix. Shep's production (as always) just solidifies the overall sonic quality, especially with his knack for full, deep bass synths. His mixes of "Chains Of Love" are by far the best.
The Pettibone Unfettered Mix has finally been released on a few commercial CD's, but for some reason, they all have a weird, inconsistent "muffled" kick drum during the intro. It sounds like the result of poorly applied modern digital noise reduction. On this promo CD, each kick drum is crisp and clear. referencing Chains Of Love (7", Single, 45 RPM) MUTE 83
The Mark Moore (S'Express) remix is pretty good - A real "London" vibe from that time.- Edited 2 years agoOther than "A Little Respect", this is probably Erasure's biggest hit. It has aged well too, like most of the "Innocents" album. The Shep Pettibone "remixes" are pretty lame, like most of what he did. He was one of those guys that was an editor rather than a remixer -- US record companies (especially Sire) would turn to him a lot in the 80s to pump out lazy edits of big tunes to try and garner interest in a song. Pettibone was huge then, and I never understood why, and I still don't. His formula was basically this: tack on a few minutes of beats, and loop a vocal sample over and over. His edits were very predictable, and predictably boring at that. The two other remixes here from Phill Legg and Mark Maguire are far more interesting, and actually take the song in slightly different directions while creating a new production around the original -- essentially what a remix should be. There are two levels of remixers out there: the Razormaid remix service level, and the professional/artistic level. It's basically McDonalds vs. The Four Seasons, and Shep Pettibone is the happy meal of club culture.
- Classic Erasure and a career highlight for the band. This song was all over the radio and in the nightclubs in 1988 and still gets airplay in retro nightclubs today. Essential Erasure choon.
- Edited 8 years agoOn the copy that I have the labels are pressed on the wrong side. The single track side, 'Chains of Love (Foghorn Mix)', has the printed label on it.

Anyone ever had an issue ripping or playing this CD on a PC? I have not been able to play or rip it. This is the second ever CD from the late 80's to cause issues for me.
