Coldcut – Some Like It Cold

Essential! I did not know how much I'd enjoy this, until I had it.

Some like it cold, and some like it old given this is somehow about to celebrate its 30th birthday very shortly! And just like plenty of 30 year olds out there, this is still cool as you like despite the sweet passage of time. Even though it might not be Coldcut's best, it's still pretty funky awesome with some very cool and groovy corners. There are some early examples of future hip-hop stars laid down with the likes of Queen Latifah gracing the awesome opener track 'Find A Way' and Roots appearing on the last track on the first side of the record with 'R.U. Ready', letting us know that, yes, he is definitely ready (with 'Ride The Pressure' between the two sounding like some early Add N to X awesomeness). 'Bass 4 Luv' is the best of side 2 for me with some outrageously funky stuff happening throughout, but with all that said it's fair to say that there's certainly more consistent quality on future Ninja Tune / Coldcut servings...but still, I just love something about this that makes me very happy to have it on vinyl.

Very much disagree with previous review: Coldcut's "Ride The Pressure" is an awesome lill' stonker of a tune, full of fun and vigour...swings like a Steinski mash up. That track makes this worth buying...no second thoughts!

You forget "Ride the Pressure". A great electronic funky break track.

This 12" goes out with an "For DJ´s only" print on it, which is totally meaningless because this is an regular elpee. It´s one from the years in that Coldcut did not really know how to go on with their music and had problems with the music industrie pissin´ them off. Maybe that´s why "Find a Way" (hehe) with Queen Latifah (based on the "Smoke" beat from the 88´s Lp) is the only real good song on dis album. The trax "Original Box" and "Bass 4 Luv" are also okay, but no reason to buy this.
Though all other Coldcut releases and Ninja Tune stuff is highly recommended...
