Axxis has always been one of those reliable bands that would essentially serve up the same style of album over and over. It never really bothered me, because I like the kind of melodic hard rock the band plays and they're all consistently high quality albums. I must say, the band threw me a curve ball with their ninth studio album, 2006's Paradise in Flames.
No, they didn't go metalcore or start rapping all over the place. What they did was bring in a female vocalist - one Lakonia - to counterbalance Bernhard Weiss's distinctive voice. It's still the same Helloween meets Scorpions melodic hard rock (though perhaps a touch heavier this time around), but the dueling vocals give Paradise in Flames a definite shot of energy. The melodies are catchier, the songs heavier, and the overall vibe brings to mind the better Pink Cream 69 albums (not coincidentally, PC69's Dennis Ward mixed this one).
Paradise in Flames was a very pleasant surprise, and may just be the best Axxis album since Kingdom of the Night. If you're a fan of the band, you'll definitely want to check this one out. It also makes an ideal "jumping on" point for newcomers who might want to discover what Axxis has to offer.
