- Edited one month agoAfter "Motown" FINALLY released an album for "The Spinners", the well sort of went dry for the group...Within that time, various members served as Road Managers, Chaperones, and Chauffeurs for various groups on the Label...
With that, "Edgar "Chico" Edwards" left the group...With "Motown" actually prompted to have the group Record an album, the group was introduced to a VERY TALENTED Singer in "G.C. Cameron"....This resulted with "2nd Time Around" (By way of the "V.I.P" Imprint)...Would it be an HONEST release by "Motown"? Well, let's see....
The Album starts with a BLAST with the Ultimate, Ultimate, Ultimate, Ultimate, Ultimate Crown Jewel, "It's A Shame"...This "Stevie Wonder" (along with "Syreeta Wright" and "Lee Garrett") Joint was, not only the HIT the group needed, but the BEST SONG they EVER HAD at "Motown", PERIOD!!!! When you hear that Guitar Riff at the beginning, you just KNEW!!!! "It actually showed how GREAT the group was from the start!!!!!! "G.C. Cameron's" Vocals was also a FRESH START for the group as well....
"I've Got To Find Myself A Brand New Baby" kind of sounds like "The Four Tops" said, "You Guys Can Have This One".....It's not bad, in fact it's pretty good...I just feel like something is missing though....
"Together We Can Make Such Sweet Music", is another Crown Jewel Banger...."Bobbie Smith" hugs the Sweet Melody, having "G.C." to back him up PERFECTLY....The Melody makes me do those "Isaac D Body Sways", and I constantly repeat it!!!!
"Bad, Bad Weather (Till You Come Home)" almost sounds like a "Temptation" left over...The good thing is, that the groups Harmony makes it truly a "Spinners" Crown Jewel Record....It also showcases "Pervis Jackson's" Bass Vocal to the tee...
"G.C." lays his Husky Vocals on "Pay Them No Mind"....On the surface it might sound like a typical "Motown" joint, but again, the groups Vocals really makes it their own....Another Crown Jewel....
"My Lady Love", again has "G.C." putting his Husky Vocals on another Crown Jewel...He must have really settled with the group, because the groups Background Vocals they lay supports him PERFECTLY!!!!!
Now, I have to admit that the album wans a bit with the groups versions of "O-o-h Child", "My Whole World Ended (The Moment You Left Me)" and "(She's Gonna Love Me) At Sundown"....They are not that good to me personally...Sorry Guys....
"Souly Ghost" was also not me cup of tea.....
Now, I pause with the groups Version of "Can Sing A Rainbow / Love Is Blue", even though it doesn't even comes close to "The Dells".....
Well, with this album, the group FINALLY found a measure of, not just success, but of IMPORTANCE as well...Even if that was the case though, as soon as the groups contract was up, they didn't HESITATE to leave "Motown"!!!!!! "G.C. Cameron" (loving being in the group), could not leave, because he was individually under contract with "Motown"....He was NOT happy about that!!!!!
With that, there was nothing but POSSIBILITIES in the minds of "The Spinners" future...They have proven with this album, that in the RIGHT hands, they could be a group to be reckoned with!!!! We will DEFINATELY see that in the future...
Be that as it may, this album (even though under "Motown") belongs in "The Spinners" History....FACTS!!!!!! referencing 2nd Time Around (LP, Album, Stereo) VIPS-405
Mine has a label variant in which the song title text is aligned left instead of following the edge of the yellow. The catalog number on the label is VIPS instead of just VS as it says on the sleeve.
