- I think this sounds wonderful. The brass sounds right there in the left and right speakers. You can even hear a little echo effect to the brass. The drums are well-articulated and the cymbals exhibit full decay. The piano sounds pretty good as well - better than your usual van Gelder recording. The bass is pretty good, but the least impressive of the instruments, in terms of recorded sound.
In addition, it is recorded loudly and I hear no tape hiss whatsoever. This is a solid SACD. - Nelson and Dolphy are fire on this album. The pressing itself checks all the boxes. Flat, quiet, shinny… the music jumps out at you and is wonderful sonically. Another killer release from Analogue Productions!
- Man, what a record this is!
Unlike some of the looser Bob Weinstock affairs - I'm looking at you "Mobley's Message" - this is a tightly executed, and intense set from start to finish.
Nelson is brimming with guts and bluster, Dolphy's weaves his abstract magic, and the surprise star is Richard Williams. Mingus fans will know him, but anyone else could be forgiven for never having heard of him. And that's a shame, because he has a distinct voice worth hearing. Clean, clear, almost piercing, he plays with superb dexterity and articulation, and no shortage of interesting ideas. Haynes and Duvivier are as rock solid as you'd expect, and Richard Wyands provides very tasteful comping, and a few flourishing solos of his own.
The New Jazz label at it's best.
Oh - it doesn't hurt that it's on premium QRP wax, and cut by ol' Kevin Patricia(?) Gray too.
