- Edited one year agoI do believe the drum solo in "El Coco Baile" is a Buddy Rich solo. I can`t be 100% sure but there is something about it that screams BR.
- Edited 3 years agoIt's all over the place but, as usual with Schmidt's work, that's the actual point of it all.
"El Coco Baile" has barely anything to do with bossa nova ('weird nova' as the artist himself puts it... i guess he's talking about bossa? what else) and gets interrumped by a 'nonsensical drum solo by anonymous artist' (sampled, mind you) midway. "La Noche Cool" begins as something straight out from Datacide II and before you know it becomes a dreamy, cool Bolero. Main rhythm from "Pisco Control" has to be taken straight from a latin jazz record, Coconut just adds his Lisa Carbon thing with a lenghty moog solo on top of it and it works because of its context. Everywhere else rhythms aren't really that latin, even if it's all being done with salsa and mambo samples (and so many Perez Prado 'uhs'!) it usually ends up sounding like electro, but it's not like that's a bad thing considering this album is NOT supposed to be a direct homage to latin rhythms (as later albums under the Coconut moniker are) but a mashup of latin stuff and Schmidt's trademark crazy electronic sound(s). So it's more cerebral than what you might be expecting. - This guy is crazy and his musical creation is absolutely unique. Album of course is a giant point in music history and 'Suavito (Jive Eclectico)' track will be in pole position for about two days in my new year's party. Memorable. Recommended for sure.
- Progressive Latin music aint but in the hands of a German living in the heartlands of south America perhaps thats changed. I am SURE this music is and never going to be accepted widely by latin America so its our open minded western Caucasians who will likely appreciate Mr. Coconuts experiments in electro Latino funk!
Upbeat in your ear rhythmic latin influenced electronic replete with Roland analog drum boxes, acoustic congos, bongos, shakers and the expected vocoder vocalizing. Fun to listen to and not as "weird" as one might expect. There alot of complexity to some arrangements/compositions and at times a little fusion thrown in for good measure. - Tasty and refreshing latin-flavoured music, this album bestows the genre with a new level of awareness, using electronic gear only, makes it sound even better than the traditional latin american approach and generally more appealing to a western ear. The rhythms are extremely addictive, even if you thought you could never like latin american music, Señor Coconut is going to prove you wrong, especially if you are already into quality electronic music. Go listen and buy the album is well worth it!!!
