Colin Newman – A-Z

A fantastic post-punk album that stumbles along in sophisticated fashion, and a very good pressing!

This is an essential Colin Newman album to have - and definitely this 2 x CD edition, because of the extra Riverside demos which are stunning.

As I have written elsewhere, for me, Not Me is a critical single (and of course sung by the writer). And yet the track only appears on the special 2 x cd version of A-Z. On the second A-Z disc there are two demos of Not Me, the fantastic studio quality Riverside demo then the home demo.

It would be great if Colin attended to a proper 7"single release of Not Me (like the Riverside demo).

I first heard Colin Newman with his A-Z album, which is still my favourite album of his. I couldn’t state a favourite, but one track I constantly go to is S-S-S-Star Eyes, for the sheer, frenetic joy of it. But it’s best to hear the album in full, starting with I’ve Waited Ages (!!!). The early Eighties were an incredible time of musical brilliance. This album still sounds fresh, an outstanding breakthrough in music, no doubt a personal endeavour for Colin Newman.

The best Wire album that's not a real Wire album.

Fantastic record, fits right in with the first 3 Wire albums. But there is some substantial distortion on quite a few of the tracks on mine without any visible scratches and after being meticulously cleaned. Does anyone else have this issue with theirs?

This pressing takes a lot of heat from folks. The low end could have been more present, but that's about as much of a gripe as I have with this pressing. As far as loudness wars casualties are concerned, this one was merely grazed by the bullet.

My favourite solo LP from Mr. Newman. Fantastic songs, great sounds. Newmans exaggerated singing meets the limits.
Like many other remastered records nowadays (2017) the general level is lowered, you have to turn up your volume to get the full sound. Headphone sickness, u no.
