Notes
"On the Border" is the third studio album by the Eagles, released in 1974. During the making of the album, the band experienced significant changes. As the band tried to lean towards a more hard rock sound, they felt that producer Glyn Johns overemphasized their country sound. After recording only two songs, the band let go of Johns and hired Bill Szymczyk. At Frey's request they brought in guitarist Don Felder to add slide guitar to the song "Good Day in Hell". The band was so impressed that they invited Felder to become the fifth Eagle. They credited him as a late arrival on the album's liner notes. The album reached #17 on the charts and sold 2 million copies. The album also released three singles, "Already Gone", "James Dean " and "Best Of My Love". The singles reached #32, #77 and #1 respectively. "Best of My Love" became the band's first of five chart toppers. "My Man" was also released in the UK only.
This is the first album by the Eagles to be released in Quadraphonic surround sound. It was released on Quadraphonic 8-track tape and CD-4 LP.

- On a proper setup, this sounds pretty awesome. The soundstage is there...the bass is detailed instead of muffled...the intricate details can be heard due to the low noise floor. Worth every penny.
- Edited 5 months agoI've been listening more to this pressing and am really enjoying it. The high end does sound weird on "Already Gone" but I think it's just the way the recording is combined with their mastering. Even though it sounds weird, it still sounds much more detailed and clean than most versions I've heard. Once you get past track one, this record really shines. Quiet, detailed, and great seperation.

This is a vast improvement on the very 'edgy' and thin sound on my original copy. 'Already Gone' sounds like it is still a bit shrill but the rest are much better tamed. The Glyn Johns produced tracks sound the best in terms of dynamics and tone but there is more detail and depth to the rest too. You can turn this up and get the full benefit. This is certainly the best master I've ever heard. There's an argument that this master might take away some of the urgency and energy but just crank the volume and you get so much back.- My copy is defect free. It sounds good in terms of separation and clarity but the top end isn’t that great… Sounds artificially boosted in the 10Khz region (not saying it’s bright), yet ends up lacking presence. Overall, it’s not very dynamic either. Pleasant enough but no wow factor.
- Edited 10 months agoI told myself that I did not need the vinyl and would only get the SACDs. The Bellman pressings were very good and that was that. Then this one was on sale at a local store for $80. I know all about MOFI being less that forthright about their process and not really being AAA. I am bit more in the camp that judges based on what I hear although not completely. I was lucky that my copy was flat, clean and noise free. The sound is everything I would have wanted and more. Clearly better than the Bellman and 1974 1st press. Instrument separation and clarity is superb on my modest systems. I have to believe this vinyl does make a part of the difference but certainly not the whole story.
Please - no more sales. I need to lock myself in the basement with what I have for a while. But, this one is a keeper if you get a good pressing. Is it worth it at $125? What are you willing to spend and is this a desert island album for you? It is different for everyone. - Quality control for a record this price is horrendous. Record is warped and just so much of surface noise on the record. Recording and mastering is impeccable but the pressing plant doing this should be burnt to the ground. .
- I received mine yesterday, and it sounds fantastic. I like the Eagles, not enough to drop this dough, except i've heard great things, and I found a great price, on this set. I feel a bit deceived by Mo-Fi, but when things sound this good it's hard to complain. What really bothers me is the DSD 64 pressings, I've already bought. They sound great too, but I'm left wondering how much improvement a DSD 256 transfer would have rendered.
- By comparison with the 2018 Bellman/Grundman remaster - which is absolutely decent - IMHO this is a clear improvement in terms of dynamics and soundstage. There’s an extra dimension here; more depth and clarity to the vocals - especially the lead vocals - and more definition overall between the instruments.
Regardless of however this One Step has been produced regarding DSD, analogue or whatever, it sounds fantastic.
Anyone who claims that this release is lacking in dynamics either has something wrong with their ears or something wrong with their system. - Your best bet is to buy a clean OG you will be much happier and you will save a lot of $$$. Did an A-B comparison the OG was much more dynamic.
