Discovering the Audio Map to a New Hip Hop Frontier
I see reviews where people say "Once you start listening, you'll buy all of ____'s albums" and it's not necessarily the case. This, however, IS one of those instances.
I journeyed down the road of listening to RJD2's albums in order of release. Part of the surprise of his album release periods are the guesswork of "What mood is this album going to be...mostly?" "More Is Than Isn't" is an album where any answer to the previous question is a correct one. And ultimately, it doesn't matter what mood you're in anyway, because that's how universal this album becomes. RJ's focus in crafting quality music, and this album, could unlock a musical room in your brain that you didn't know existed, and add timeless decorations for those who did know that unique room existed.
Firstly, the reoccurring suites throughout the album do such a fantastic job setting the tone, and that's one of this album's solidifying qualities: the tone. You get that big smirk on your face during really iconic RJ drum breaks, followed by tracks that really get your blood pumping, then you occasionally become soothingly relaxed. This happens over and over again within the entirety of the album, and RJ's intuitiveness to layout the tracks this way is going to be deeper and sharper hooks in your ear bringing you back to this album over and over again.
The album art is real low key way to compliment this albums subtle brilliance, and I'm so excited for the next person to hear this album, give it a complete listen, and come to the same pleasant revelation I had about it. "More Is Than Isn't" is solid from beginning to end, with tasteful detail in every track, topped with RJ's signature touch to hip hop tracks. Get in the back seat on the album cover, close your eyes, empty your mind as much as you can, hit play, and let this album fill up all the empty spaces as RJD2 drives you down the roads only he knows exists in the hip hop world.
