referencing Did My Time (CD, Single, Stereo) EPC 674142 2
Originally thought up during the studio sessions for their 2002 album 'Untouchables' Korn's heavy hitter 'Did My Time' was used to promote the movie 'Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle Of Life' a year later. Due to contractual obligations however the song couldn't be featured on the film's soundtrack but would find later fame on the Nu-Metal group's 6th album 'Take A Look In The Mirror'.
Although created for an earlier album 'Did My Time' seems to have a quality that breaks Korn's conventional evolution to the point where it could have been featured in any part of their back catalogue up to then. With it's incredible guitar hooks, superb production and dark lyrical content this is Korn at their commercial peak, something that would continue with the follow up single 'Right Now' which would carry a similar structure.
Also featured on this release is a more electronic variant of the track by Andy Gray (who had seen success a few years prior by being part of the team that wrote the theme tune for reality show 'Big Brother'). Many reworkings of Korn's songs have been either really great or something to avoid like the plague, but luckily this redux falls into the former with Gray's clever decision to keep to the original song's linier path, only adding his own electro spin to the backdrop to create a more futuristic vibe.
Last up is a cover of Metallica's polarising single 'One' recorded live at a tribute concert hosted by MTV that same year. It's a very paint by numbers affair and only really impressive if you happen to be a fan of the Trash Metallers. Thankfully it decides to shorten the song's runtime so as to not outstay its welcome and weirdly enough the track ends up working quite well with Korn's heavy sound. This last song would also be included as a hidden track on 'Take A Look In The Mirror' so to be fair the only reason to obtain this single is for collector purposes or if you want to get your hands on a fairly decent remix, regardless 'Did My Time' is a landmark moment in Korn's career that would prove to many that these guys were still pretty relevant in the 21st century.
