Robert Miles Feat. Maria Nayler – One And One

Beautiful song, but the original version was always way too goddamn slow. Thankfully DJ remix service Direct Hit's Sector 7 Issue gave us the proper uptempo extended album version that everyone wanted. It also heavily incorporates the awesome album track "4 Us" to great effect.

Morales does some nice reworks of this one, you have the Journey & Club Mixes which lean on the progressive house direction and a Dub Mix which has the chunky Def Mix sound. The Club mix starts out with the repetitious synth-line that is driving the mix forward and then kicks along, the bassline is brought on fast and the track gains steam quickly. Three minutes in it dips into a break where the vocal is introduced and Morales breaks some strings and eventually a piano.

The Journey mix starts with a dark pad and goes about in the same way as the club mix but with the exception that the bassline isn't introduced until halfway in and there is no beatless breakdown. The vocal has reduced to affected bites and the rhythm is quite driving which makes this version quite useful in the hands of progressive house or trance jocks.

The Dub is a chunky slab of house that is rhythmically similar to the club/journey mixes but removes the darker undertones. Morales' henchmen Moskowitz & Burner provide some excellent synth work to the table and with all the little breaks, this version gives the DJ a good challenge to work with.

The track 4Us is outstanding. A departure from the usual Robert Miles style of the time. A real slow building Sasha style progressive track from beginning to end with a huge string breakdown. Completely overlooked progressive classic. The Quivver mixes are OK but if you can hunt down this doublepack and check out 4Us.
