"Althought there has been some debate about whether or not an instrumental record can be accurately termed soul, i myself feel a side like this more than proves it can. Smooth as a billard ball and as cool as a cucumber, this is another side that Mods took to their hearts since, like them, it was neat, cool, smart and sharp. A warm and welcoming club atmosphere is generated by the random voices making interjections and live commentary, with clinking glasses and subliminal love murmurs making it all real and meaningful and creating quite a stunning mood fix.
The Packers were formed by Stax co-founder Estelle Axton's son, Charles "Packy" Axton, who played tenor sax, and no doubt recruited other musicians from the Memphis studios to form this group. The composer credits perhaps give a clue as to who they might have been. He had played with the Mar-Keys and, although the recording was issued on a Los Angeles based label, it's my hunch that it was almost certainly recorded in Memphis. As well as having records issued on Pure Soul, the Packers also had released on Tangerine, Imperial, Mark II and HBR, but whether or not these were the same musicians is anybody's guess, since their original line-up was always shrouded in mystery."
Dave Godin, December 2002 (from the KENT SOUL "Cellar Of Soul" Compilation liner notes)
