Reviews
- SHEEP ON DRUGS are part of the INVISIBLE RECORDS circus, rubbing shoulders with ex-innovators-who-haven't-burnt-out-honest-but-have-taken-an-artistic-direction-change-which-might-make-them-more-widely-acceptable-but-what-the-hey. The IR extended family includes TEST DEPT, GENESIS P ORRIDGE, LITTLE ANNIE and any number of 70's-80's Industrio-Geniuses - SHEEP ON DRUGS are chronologically latecomers, but seem to still have magma pumping through their veins, despite Mr. ATKINS' "Let's Add Soul Singers" Bad-Boy mirror reflection of WOBBLE's post-PIL World View approach to production. SHEEP ON DRUGS's music assimilates Hip Hop, Jungle & "New Wave" music, using fast dance rhythms to help carry you from the albums opening moment to final silence in record time. In one of the more sedate moments in this impressive war of sound, it seems ED KA-SPEL's living ghost pays a visit.
This album even touches the hem of Commerciality with "Come Fly With Me" and a sharp cover version of REED's "Waiting For The Man", and survives with dignity. If you can imagine a frantic, skeletal version of CARTER USM, a Drum 'N' Bass Cul-De-Sac Semi-Pop-Music which exudes energy, then you might almost divine what their sound is.
Not an album to listen to if you fancy a relaxing night in front of a roaring fire, but full of understated party fun.
Originally reviewed for Soft Watch. - Excellent beast of an album from the SOD boys.
The Drum and Bass is more in the forefront and the lyrics are some of Rex X'z best. The Velvets cover is in my mind the total
update for copping dope in britan in the late 90's as opposed to New york in the 70's.Its a Great cover. It should have been a much bigger album but the boys got fucked over by Martin Atkins who they signed with to Invisiable who just did not push them in the states like they deserved. While they are a real British core band they are so good that with the right rec company behind them they would have broken the Electronic Punks Rave/Rock crossover way before the prodigy did.
.Aslo the last album with Duncan Rex X 's Vocals, which made the band unique. If you havent got it,get it.
Its a Evil Bitch in the bands own words.
Brap On.
Just wanted to note the cd should come with a Sheep on Drugs
'Tabloid" ie like the sun newspaper in britan.
Its a really funny 4 page send up and is a unique addition to the cd.
